    Interview with French winners Panache!

"We’ve never worked together this much and this hard before, and we love what we do"

Panache! met in Paris in 2016. Four young musicians named Raoul (guitar), Sam (piano), Felix (drums) and Pierre (synth) were playing music together from time to time and one day Raoul heard his neighbor singing. He went over next door and asked Amelia if she wanted to try singing in his band. And so she did. For a few months it was only covers for end of the year concerts and then, as the five of them were becoming friends they started writing their own songs. In February, Panache! decided to sign up to Emergenza and it was probably the best decision ever. The band started rehearsing intensely and even took a goofy and groovy trip to Normandy to record their song Magnetic in a studio. After Taubertal, Panache! is driving to Sardinia for a summer vacation-creation trip. The next step will be to release an EP at the beginning of 2019.

    1) You have participated in the Emergenza Festival Edition 2017/2018. What made you decide to take part in it?
It was something like a flip of a coin. Tiphaine from the Emergenza Paris team contacted us on facebook and we thought “why not?”.

    2) As you approach the world final, what is your state of mind?
    Serene. Enthousiastic !

    3) What is your best memory from your Emergenza experience?
The massive crowd of friends and family members dancing to our music during the final at the Bataclan.

    4) What's behind your band's name? Any specific meaning?
Pnch! Also in French, “panache” refers to some kind of elegant energy. It’s an old word, we don’t really use it anymore, but somehow it has this really cool, fresh meaning.

    5) If you had to choose a famous song that represents your band...which one would it be?
Sandra Kim - “J’aime la vie”

    6) Can you tell us a funny story or anecdote about your experience on stage? And one which happened in backstage or during the preparation of a show ?
(Amelia): The first time we performed our own songs in Paris at an outdoor concert, I was a little too brutal when taking the mic off of the stand while singing, and I cut my lip open with it. I was making weird faces trying to swallow the blood so I had to tell the audience “sorry I hit my mouth with the mic...” The last time we performed for Emergenza, at the Bataclan, Felix was guiding a self-hypnosis session for all of us to relax, so we were all lying down on the ground in the dressing room when Simon, who was hosting the event, opened the door and was obviously a bit confused. We have some more funny stories on our Youtube channel, if you want.

    7) How would you describe your music ?
Quite intellectual but not posh alternative pop. We try to have meaningful lyrics even in the more dancy songs.

    8) Before you go on stage, do you have a ritual or a good luck charm that goes everywhere with you?
We hug each other and remind ourselves from the 1998 football world cup. Next time we want to try self-hypnotization.

    9) What is your dream gig?

Opening for a headline composed of Lady Gaga, Meshuggah, Feu! Chatterton, Groundation.

    10) What can audiences expect from one of your live performances?
Smiles, fun dance routines, overall refreshing uplifting vibe.

    11) If you could invite a band or an artist at your party, dead or alive, who would it be? Johnny Hallyday or David Guetta.
(Amelia): I would invite Florence Welch because she’s awesome, or Superorganism because their performances are really fun.

    12) What are your short to medium term plans after the international final?
World domination, excepting North Korea and Mozambiq. We want to release an EP and keep playing in Paris regularly.

    13) What inspires you when you are composing (musical inspirations or others) ?
    Each other.

    14) What question did I forget?
Bistrot 77 really should include pizza in their student meal. How we met of course ! it’s funny because we formed in Paris but none of us is from there.

    15) Why do you think you deserve to win the 2018 Festival edition?
Because we Féfé.... Because we’ve never worked together this much and this hard before, and we love what we do. And also because we delayed our Panache! vacation plans in Sardinia to come here.
