BREAK UP LINES started as an acoustic project between Kevin Ratte and Martin Houde, operating at the time under the name ‘’Apologize for May’’. The duo performed a few shows and recorded their first demo under Growing Roots Records (RIP).
Over time, they felt the need to complete their compositions. It was then that the two guitarists decided to call Laurent Comtois Martel, drummer of the now retired band ‘’ The Accousticolics ‘’. The latter decided to join the two amigos to add his personal touch. The arrival of a drummer gave a boost to the group whose sound began to evolve more and more towards rock. After some time, the group finally found their bassist in David Talbot who was the last missing piece of the puzzle.
A strong chemistry further developed between the four musicians and their passion for music pushed them to improve week after week until the group finally broke onto the scene music with unwavering attitude.
1) You have participated in the Emergenza Festival Edition 2017/2018. What made you decide to take part in it?
Because we had the chance to play on big stage in Quebec, Canada.
2) As you approach the world final, what is your state of mind?
We are pretty exited, motivated, and ready to burn the stage!
3) What is your best memory from your Emergenza experience?
When we won the Canadian Final at the Metropolis in Montreal, Canada.
4) What's behind your band's name? Any specific meaning?
For us, Break Up Lines means to break the guidelines by playing diffenrent styles of music in our songs.
5) If you had to choose a famous song that represents your band...which one would it be?

6) Can you tell us a funny story or anecdote about your experience on stage? And one which happened in backstage or during the preparation of a show ?
After a show, a guy we didn’t know stepped at us and said that Break Up Lines music and performance were amazing. So he bough a shirt and an album of us, and he proudly wanted to show them to us, but it was the album and the shirt of another performing band he was wearing ! Poor drunk guy !
7) How would you describe your music ?
It’s a mix of punk/rock/pop/alternative and metal with lot of vocal harmonies, energetic hooking riffs and melodies.
8) Before you go on stage, do you have a ritual or a good luck charm that goes everywhere with you?
A Jaggerbomb shooter and a good old band handshake !
9) What is your dream gig?
To be the headliner of a big festival.
10) What can audiences expect from one of your live performances?
Our energy, tightness, and vocal harmonies.
11) If you could invite a band or an artist at your party, dead or alive, who would it be?
The Foo Fighters
12) What are your short to medium term plans after the international final?
We would like to book more shows, to release a videoclip and preparing our second album.
13) What inspires you when you are composing (musical inspirations or others) ?
We like to use our life in general for inspirations.
14) What question did I forget?
For how long Did the band exist? At the end of November, it will be since 5 years.
15) Why do you think you deserve to win the 2018 Festival Edition?
Because we really think that Break Up Lines has everything to emerge. Catchy songs, nice melodic riffs and a good presence on stage. Even if we are hardworker, you’ll always need the chemistry in a band to make it go far ahead. And Break Up Lines has it ! The chemistry is the key !
