    The Rainbow Rock's!

    Blowing away the competition!

Did anyone else catch the last step #1 show in Ottawa? If not you missed your first chance to see the eventual winners! The night started off strong and seemed to stay in a similar genre for most of the night, with a few minor exceptions. From punk to screamo to hardcore with a few pop, blues and pure rock tunes thrown in the mixture for some diversity. I was standing in the back when the show kicked off around 8:30 but by the end I was front and centre shaking and bouncing along with the closing act! There were a few amateur bands along way that got sacrificed to the rock gods but I commend them for putting forth a solid effort just the same. A few of the highlights on the night were: A New World Disorder who ran a little short on time but was encouraged by the crowd to play one of their earlier covers over. Juventus, who's melodic songs and guitarist's "freak-out" guitar solo won over a large portion of the crowd, enough to earn them second place overall. But by far the highlight of the night came when I was pulling on my coat to head out after being at the Rainbow for over 5 hours. The last band of the night, ""Makeshift" blew me away from their opening chords! I could tell this was going to be good! A young band from, Renfrew (atleast I think that's where they said they were from) seemed to have all the pieces in place for a solid future in the music biz. Their guitarist amazed the entire venue with his mastery of the guitar. Intriquite melodies, flying solos and unique chording were all in his bag of tricks. Look for this guy to win "best guitarist" in Ottawa and if not the entire festival! Also, the vocalist was very strong from start to finish. His voice sustained at times, sharp and powerful at others suited this band's music perfectly. I have no doubt that this is the band to beat this year. So don't miss your next chance to see these guys! I know i won't. Good luck Makeshift and I'll be seeing you in the finals!
