Melancholia project was born in Foligno (Italy) in 2015, when Fabio Azzareli (keyboard-synth), Filippo Petruccioli (electric guitar) and Benedetta Alessi (voice) started to think about a way to create something that could represent their opposite tastes in music: from rap to ballads, from an electronic sound to a dirtier one.
Their music is an electronic sound mixed with rap, indie and pop. They try to explain, with their songs, the feelings that they can't face in the real life. Their music is a sort of liberation from the evilness hidden in our bodies. They have a pessimistic view of society, a society that tries to homologate us.
They’re working on their first EP, but something is already on internet.
1) You have participated in the Emergenza Festival Edition 2017/2018. What made you decide to take part in it?
We decided to take part in this contest because it's hard to find places to make live music, so we think that could be a good opportunity to grow up as band and to improve our live shows.
2) As you approach the world final, what is your state of mind?
We're excited obviously, but we try to focus on the work before the stage.
3) What is your best memory from your Emergenza experience?
The first one is about the Final at Afterlife live Club, the first one. We're playing Message Man, a twenty one pilots cover, and when raised our heads we saw the entire club full of people. The second one is certainly when the announcer declared us as winners.
4) What's behind your band's name? Any specific meaning?
Sure it's not a positive meaning (they laugh). Melancholia is a perpetual state of depression, a negative vibe that come from a soul disease that the greek Hippocrates studied. He identify four moods and melancholia is the darkest one.
5) If you had to choose a famous song that represents your band...which one would it be?
Maybe is Goner from twenty one pilots.
6) Can you tell us a funny story or anecdote about your experience on stage? And one which happened in backstage or during the preparation of a show ?
There's a sort of curse. The relationship between Fabio and the microphones is hard. Everytime that he has to sing the microphone stand breaks during the show. That's happened also during the semi-final in Perugia and it could happen again...
7) How would you describe your music?
An overdose of thoughts.
8) Before you go on stage, do you have a ritual or a good luck charm that goes everywhere with you?
Yes, Filippo in our slang says "Arriamu terzi" that means "we'll arrive in the third position".
9) What is your dream gig?
Certainly our dream is play all around the world and live for that.
10) What can audiences expect from one of your live performances?
An overdose of feelings.
11) If you could invite a band or an artist at your party, dead or alive, who would it be?
Filippo says Slash (he's the vintage one), Fabio Chester Bennington and Benedetta Morrissey. But if we have to choose as a band we invite twenty one pilots.
12) What are your short to medium term plans after the international final?
Promote our EP, write songs and play around as much as we can.
13) What inspires you when you are composing (musical inspirations or others)?
Certainly our feelings. Our music comes from the stomach, is istinctive and emotional.
14) Why do you think you deserve to win the 2018 Festival edition?
Because our show will be sick, crazy, delirious, sad, melancholic, emotional, mad, angry, depressive, pure and full of energy.
