Interview with French winners Alfa Martians

Simple melodies and accurate words to sing along to

Alfa Martians is born in 2017 but only after long years of shared friendship & music.

More than 6 years ago, they started to compose and sing together on Cesar & Martin’s sofa.

The will of singing and harmonizing came very fast and gave the project its color. Just like trio like Crosby, Stills & Nash, each member is the lead singer and the side man.

Leonard Cohen, Jake Bugg, Joao Gilberto, Bill Evan, Henri Salvador, Mesaria Evra, Hugues Affray, Compay Segundo, Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley… Plenty of influences that come from all over the world.

The aim: Sharing simple melodies and accurate words on stage that the public can sing along. It’s their solar energy and candid flippancy that may have seduced the audience and the jury during the Emergenza Festival in Paris.

    1) You  have  participated  in  the  Emergenza  Festival  Edition  2017/2018.  What made you decide to take part in it?

We just started to play together, it was a good way to begin things with purposes and to challenge ourselves. Plus, it was an opportunity to play in big venues.

    2) As you approach the world final, what is your state of mind?
We’re very surprised, we didn’t think we would get so far. We reached where we wanted to but we’re very glad to have another challenge to succeed!

    3) What is your best memory from your Emergenza experience?
To celebrate each victory with our friends was incredible. But maybe the french final at the Bataclan was the greatest.

    4) What's behind your band's name? Any specific meaning?
At first it was an anagram of Lucien and Martin’s names then it became The elfes from mars.. It’s poetic isn’t it?

    5) If you had to choose a famous song that represents your band...which one would it be?
It would probably be « Dans la légende » by PNL.

    6) Can you tell us a funny story or anecdote about your experience on stage? And one which happened in backstage or during the preparation of a show ?
I think the funniest moment was Lucien losing control while talking to people on stage during our first show at the O’ Sullivan Backstage. Hard to describe but worth seeing the video.

    7) How would you describe your music?
Our music is a mix between folk & pop music with spices from different places of the world, Brazil, Italy, Cape Verde...

    8)  Before you go on stage, do you have a ritual or a good luck charm that goes everywhere with you?
We don’t have any ritual. We warm up a lot and we try to focus that’s all.

    9) What is your dream gig?

The dream gig isn’t about how big the venue is or how many people are there but more about how people are connected to us, how they follow us in our universe ! The dream gig is the gig where people are with us from the beginning until the end.

    10) What can audiences expect from one of your live performances?

We try to create very dynamic shows in order to surprise the audience. The harmony and the fact that we’re three singers is usually attractive for people. Plus we try to make them danse, clap their hands and sing with us a lot ! A good show is when you end up tired and full of emotion and inspiration, that’s what we’re trying to do.

    11) If you could invite a band or an artist at your party, dead or alive, who would it be?
It would probably be Paul McCartney.

    12) What are your short to medium term plans after the international final?
We’re currently working on our first EP so the plan is to end it. Then we’ll try to tour a lot because that’s what we like.

    13) What inspires you when you are composing (musical inspirations or others) ?
We mostly write about our relatives. Family and friends are the biggest inspiration to us.

    14) What question did I forget?
I think you were pretty accurate!

    15) Why do you think you deserve to win the 2018 Festival edition?

I don’t think we deserve anything before we hit the stage, maybe we’ll answer that question after the show!
