Recaping the fourth night of Emergenza shows at O Patro Vys

Six band ready to set fire to a room quickly filled with an eagar crowd.

    Audiocassette
Audiecassette kicks off the night in style. It’s never easy to be the first band up, but it’s clear that these guys are veterans on stage. The singer takes the audience into the first song with a great energy. We are served five alternative rock pieces which really get the crowd going. Their good tempo and great audience interaction was well received and set the tone for the rest of the night. We even got to hear a song – Snails & Rollercoasters, which they’d never played live before. What can we say – we’re spoiled here at Emergenza.

    The Effigy Sound
Effigy hits the stage with a great energy. Originating from Columbia, Nicaragua and Haiti, each band member brings their own flavor to the music and the result is a hot trio. The audiences’ response is powerful and immediate – nobody can sit this one out. The band mixes French, English and Spanish to bring us a spicy Hip-Hop/Reggae performance. Being the only band in this genre on this night, they brought their best and put it out for all to see. Mission accomplished.

    Stroke of genius
Suddenly the public gets much louder and it’s up to Stroke of Genius to take the stage. We strap on our long hair and headband, arms in the air, fingers pointed. Aggressive metal with powerful guitar riffs and a drummer who can hold his own will make your hair stand on end (it’s not just a result of the head banging!). Hardcore 25 minutes. The two singers bounce the vocals back and forth one a soft voice the other a classic metal scream – exactly what we want to accompany this type of music. Solid presentation, audience captivated.

    Pelican Hoax
This group of four musicians got all dressed up for this night. All dressed in old fashioned wool sweaters, my first thought was ‘poor drummer!’. The singer opens the set with a voice in stereo which makes the room shake. We are swept away for the five songs they perform for us and it’s clear that Pelican Hoax enjoys putting on a show. On the third song the drummer comes out from behind his drum and performs a very moving piece for us, followed by two more mellow songs, very pleasant to the ear. Hats off!

    Von Dalia
Von Dalia, accompanied by her four musicians takes the stage next. Described as Psychedelic Gypsy Soul, the music of Von Dalia draws the audience into her world with her velvety soft voice. We turned the lights down for this performance, a very fitting move. It’s created a mood for the songs and enchanted the audience. As the only female performer of the evening, she stood her own quite well. In the singers own words ‘it’s music, which tickles your heart and plays with your soul.

    Korum
We wrap up the night with a buzzing funk rock performance. This band from the Laurentians has come to give the audience a treat – for both eyes and ears. With and entertaining sound and their typically Quebecois lyrics, Korum is without a doubt a ‘pur laine’ band. The band members are filled with a contagious energy, a great asset since they are the last of six bands on stage. With lots of humor and pleasantries they play their five pieces and leave us in a sea of applause.
    Great end to the night!

The big winners of this fourth night are: The Effigy Sound, Stroke of genius, Pelican Hoax, Von Dalia et Korum.
Congratulations to the winners and to all of the bands who came out and gave us their best. Thank-you to the audience for having filled the room and partied with us. We have six more shows left in the first round so come’ on out to the O Patro Vy's!
