With a busy show schedule playing as many as three shows a month, Happenstance have been keeping themselves in the forefront of the local up & coming music scene not just in Montreal, but seemingly across both the province of Quebec & Ontario. This band, whose name is a play on the happy circumstances that brought them together is made up of five talented musicians, who each happened to be looking for a musical project, at just the right time. They now entertain audiences with their music, which encompasses elements of folk, rock, pop and country.
Aside from the obvious means like band profiles on online band forums and spreading the word through social media, the best way for any band to promote themselves is of course through live performance. With the number of shows Happenstance has played in the last year, it’s safe to say they are one of the best promoted bands I’ve encountered in a long time. It’s not a wonder they have well over 1,000 fans on their Facebook page. Their fans are never left wondering or wanting, as a live show is usually around the corner. The band has now also enrolled in the Emergenza Music Festival, a move which will allow them to bring their music – an fans – to some of Montreal’s top venues.
With a female vocal fronting the band, they immediately set themselves apart from many other bands on the up & coming music scene. Each one of their songs brought to mind a different musicians to me, reflecting the fact that they are influenced by a number of artists and that each of them brings a different aspect to the band. The Ocean, one of the band’s slow track is very melodic and as well as being very well written it also musically captivating. It is exemplary of a popular ballad. What Would Dorothy do on the other hand encompasses elements of folk and with the addition of some other instrument. Consistently well arranged, the band’s songs truly achieve their goal of evoking emotions within their audience.
