Active on the Montreal punk music scene since 2009, Sprinter is a band with strong experience and a good history in the local circuit. They have made an effort to not only promote and build up their own band, with their own songs and music, but also to network with other, compatible bands to break out together. They currently have two EP’s out, both of which are available online, for free. They support and promote their music by plying live shows at least once a month. 2013 could see them on the stage presented by the Emergenza Festival, the international showcase for local bands.
While this may not seem very aggressive, it’s a very strategic and effective way of planning for the calendar of any up & coming band. Since their fan base is likely calculated in hundreds, not thousands, a monthly show is a great way to get the maximum number of people out and guarantee a magical and energetic live show for the band and audience alike. They have played some of Montreal’s best know venues for emerging bands and have starred with several bands – another strategic band promotion move – share the costs, share the fans!
Sprinter’s music is fast, energetic and melodic. Described by themselves as Punk Rock, their songs embody some of both genres. The punk energy is undeniable and the vocals so typical of the style are definitely there. Some of the instrumental pieces however, are clearly rooted in the ‘rock’ portion of their influences. ‘Selfpity’ is the perfect example of this dichotomy. The intro to the song is pure rock, however as soon as the vocals kick in, the music picks up in tempo and the punk is undeniable. This ability to blend the two genres could very well be the key to their success and wide appeal.
