An apt band name for this time of year, Severed Wings is a five piece metal band formed about five years ago in the heart of Montreal. The boys have not strayed far from their roots, musically or geographically. They have stuck with downtown Montreal as the destination for the recording of their upcoming EP and also their debut live concert which was just a few months ago at Foufounnes Electriques. Ever since then, they have been asserting their presence in Montreal’s emerging music scene with a number of shows and promotional efforts.
The band is currently in talks to take part in the Emergenza Music Festival in Montreal early next year. If this goes ahead, it will give them a chance to play in front of a large, varied audience thus an even bigger opportunity to expand their fanbase. As any band knows, this is key in moving up in the local music scene. Battle of the bands are an easy and obvious tool in the band marketing toolbox particularly for emerging bands. To compliment this move, they’ve also got an EP in the works, which will give the fans something to look forward to and take home.
Even though Severed wings describe themselves as a metal band, I would tend to classify it further. While their style is certainly on the ‘harder’ end of the musical spectrum, I find it more fitting with the alternative metal/core style. I was totally taken by the drum solo that is the intro to Gunner of a Dead Man and was somewhat disappointed to not get the full scope of the song as the lyrics are not there yet. I’ll be sure to stay tuned. If the vocals of These City Lights are any indication, they will be a good mix of screamed and clean vocals – very fitting with the existing instrumental. My fav part of this song is the quick guitar riff that for a moment had me fooled into thinking it was a cymbal sound. It’s all very very promising.
