    INTERVIEW WITH SUNSET DRIVERS

On the road to the Taubertal Grand Final: Canada Finalists

Sunset Drivers won the Montreal final last week at Le Medley. They are going to hit the Taubertal stage next August, in Germany. The Canadian winner band – at the 5th of August they’ll be 17, keep posted here – answered to some questions. Let’s take a look to my interesting conversation with Sunset Drivers. From Zappa to Black Sabbath. How did you get to play together? Tell me about the birth of Sunset Drivers. "The story began in high school when Fred Raymond and Phil Sauvé started to play old school rock together, like Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. We liked extending each song into a Jam. It was cool most of the time, but sometimes not! Our goal was to create that element of magic in our interpretation... it was like a musical quest... that''s the starting point of SD!". How would you describe the music of Sunset Drivers – which is your feature in the rock universe? "Basically, we are a Rock band but we create a unique feel in each song. Sometimes it''s Funky-Rock, or Reggae-Rock. We always open our show with a Classical Rock tune. If we had to choose one category we would best describe ourselves as a Funk-Rock Band. We are inspired by so many different artists, from Hendrix to Zappa or The Police to Dave Mattews Band". How and why you decided to take part in Emergenza International Festival? "Everybody in the Band knew of this contest. After talking about it together we decided to take a chance". Did you expect to win the national final? And when did you realize it was getting possible? "We didn't even expect to win the regional final, but our fans were there every time... making a lot of noise! At the Canadian finals the judges had chosen 7 bands as the finalists, and at the end of the countdown we were in the top two. It was at this moment that we started to understand that everything is possible!". What the Emergenza experience means for you, and do you think Emergenza changed something in your local music scene? "We think Emergenza really reflects the music industry. You constantly have to find new reasons for your fans to come out and support you - but if people like your stuff, it''s much easier... like the Majors!". Just a place, a month and a number: Taubertal Open-Air festival, next August, 30,000 people. How do you feel about the Grand Final? "Really amazing! Just playing in front of that big of an audience is our own reward!". Are you going to prepare something special for your Rothenburg performance? "Of course. We'll work hard to create a great set list with some new songs". Any special comment/thank you about the Festival? "A very big thanks to all of the Emergenza people!". More plans for the future and for your music? "The sky is the limit! We''re gonna reach for the top!".
