Some Snow, Four Shows, Welcome to Toronto…
Indie attitude at the Kathedral
Fans of gritty rock and indie attitude would have enjoyed this past weekend in the Kathedral at the renowned four corners of Queen and Bathurst. Being this was my prime neighborhood for 10 years plus (some may remember my body mod. shop days) I was ready to have the action start.
Thursday, January 25th
Thursday evening Untold Story sparked off the night post hardcore/hardcore style raising the decibels in the venue immediately. Handsome took to the stage next playing a unique style of metal.
Entropy lost their drummer recently so subbed in a djimbe player making for an interesting heavy style with a hand percussion element. Amber Alert once again launched metal mayhem upon the stage.
Organic Funk was just that, an organic funk n’ roll outfit that played stripped down funky blues and rock flavored tunes.
Kirk Thomas Band finished out with keys and acoustic guitar sounds bringing a mellow end to the night.
Friday, January 26th
Friday I was truly looking forward to a full night of ear candy. UFCB’s made the evening begin with speedy alternative metal with fun narratives and alien references. Twisted Hazard brought the booking agent of the club to attention scoring a booking at the sister club in a few weeks time. These really young punk kids with foul mouths played 13 songs in less than 25 minutes. Rippa’!!!
On the other end of the spectrum Blind River a truly acoustic act played quiet introspective songs. These guys don’t even have pick-ups on their guitars.
For All Things Beautiful brought the fashionable indie grit to the stage and played a few memorable songs. The Call Up recent immigrants to Toronto from the east coast rocked with a flavor reminiscent of Thrush Hermit or Sloan’s peppermint EP days.
The Short and Curlies truly stole the show; no one can beat a band that is joined on stage (and has a song inspired) by a Hooters Girl, who would have expected that? Delicious..
Aaron Griggs & The Velvet Bulldozer pumped through blues, rock, and melodic disciplines in their set.
High Voltage brought the classic hard rock/hair rock all the way in from The Hammer, (Hamilton for those outside the golden horseshoe).
Brothers from Different Mothers are as diverse as they are talented. Hip Hop, Rock, and full on lyrical Rap, they have got it all down.
All of that plus an ongoing flirtation with the university set in Toronto makes for a recipe for success that all bands that took the stage could stand to take a look at. Definitely one of the strongest nights of talent in recent memory.
Saturday, January 27th
Saturday was another story of “where did they all go?”. Five bands to take the stage and well this is how we roll. Beginning things were the grungy boys of Sliver a throwback type of set when plaid shirts and work socks over Doc’s were cutting edge.
What can you say about BIGFIX? A man and his keyboard and a menagerie of characters, electronic sound. Rustic Motif were a bit more traditional and just plain rocked out.
Rising Revolution have now changed their name to: Omega 3 Fatty Asses, oh boy , anyway yeah they played an energetic set.
Years of Silence rounded out the night with a pretty strong showing.
Sunday, January 28th
Sunday was slippery slushy and super cold. This evening again brought five bands to the stage. The very attractive Tiffany from Voyce couldn’t get the band together Sunday night but watch out for her and the band in the next few weeks at the Kathedral she promises she will make her appearance. So that left five.
Motorbreath could have used a little organization but put together a set of metal tunes to start the night off.
Tributary was next and continued the heavy metal assault.
Dutch Love was an indie type band billed as dutch rock who played n
