This band takes its name from the famous theatre and opera house in New York, spinning Carnegie into Carnage and creating a name that appropriately expresses their edginess as well as their more refined sensibility. The four guys in Carnage Hall—all between the ages of 17 and 21—started playing music together back in 2009 when some of them were as young as 15 years old, and by now they have a seriously solid sound, fueled by their desire to write original material. As far as their sound goes, they pull their influences from bands like Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley and The White Stripes as well as Muse, who they say are a huge influence on the band’s rhythmic arrangements and vocal parts. You totally get the sense of this when you listen to their three-song, self-produced demo. There’s no argument that the recordings are garage quality, but the overall result is a compelling image of the potential this band has. It shows glimmers of extremely provocative song writing, great melodic structures, and music that is both edgy and catchy at the same time—a perfect mix for the pop rock charts. The EP includes three tracks “Heartless”, “Out My Veins”, and “Lights Go Out”, all with lyrics in English. In the opening track, the influence of Muse is undeniable. With its focus on vocal harmonies and a sort of desperate vibe in the vocals, it comes across as both epic and chaotic, fitting for the moments right before an apocalypse. The influence of Jack White is definitely there in “Out My Veins”. In this one the vocalist battles it out with his quirky, bluesy vibe, while the more metal sounding lead guitarist pushes forcefully back. Instead of heavily compressed like in White’s music the guitars in Carnage Hall are distorted beyond belief. You can definitely hear this in the EP’s closing track, fittingly titled “Lights Go Out”, which starts off with a screaming, hammer on guitar solo, before transitioning into the minimalist, almost metal djent, feel to the rhythm section. Overall, this EP is a really promising picture of what the guys in Carnage Hall are up to. They just put on an incredible show on in Brescia for the Emergenza Festival, which you can read about here. Stay tuned, big things are brewing for Carnage Hall.
