Chicago December 6-8:
If Chicago is known as a music scene, it was surely justified
with the talent that radiated out of the Elbo Room this last Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday for the Emergenza Music Festival. Phoenix Down
started off the 3-day rein over the club with strong, melodic vocals
that gave the hardcore band an edge over most. Few Left took to the
stage with their fans, that traveled via "party bus," just to get a
real feel for their modern rock n'' roll sound supported with heavy,
mature instrumentation (stunning to the audience, since their band is
comprised of kids just a few years under the legal age to be enjoying
all that the Elbo Room and it''s fine employees/bartenders have to
offer!). Avulsion of Flesh, a Chicago based metal band, played right
in the middle of the night, offering up a good mix to the night''s
seemingly rock-based line-up. Arlen, the youngest band of the night
played second to last, backed with original vocals and amazing energy,
seemed to get the talkative crowd stirring in their sneakers (or
extremely high-heeled boots). Bruce''s Red Rocket was still pulling in
an anxious crowd when they began to rock their set. Loud, rock-based
cords mingled with unique, harmonious breaks to create a band that
definitely stood out as the last spot of the evening.
Thursday''s energy certainly must have spilled over onto the 5000
South crew that started off Friday''s performance. Rhythm and a solid,
pleasant vibe filled the night air as if reminding us that we were
still in for a great couple nights at the Elbo. Wesley Harding''s indie
rock sound vibrated through the room like a virgin trying out a new
toy while her parent''s slept, piercing through the last remaining
conversations with a few deep rock guitar solos. However, no one
commanded attention or got the room going like Allegra Dolores and
accompanying band. The vocals, themselves, had the audience singing
their praises even after the band had stepped offstage. The Calvary
entered their set with quite a lively audience that quickly paid close
attention to the sophisticated drumming not usually found in most
undiscovered alternative material. Leathur Cheetah, took to the stage
with the last female band member we would see all weekend long. The
stunning vocals of this sassy band certainly matched the unrelenting
guitar solos and vibrant cords that supported her every word. The last
band to make some noise during the Friday night line-up did just that.
2Nsane Records filled the Elbo with a sound not often heard in the
thick, concrete walls but exposed it''s audience to the rap/rock feel
of the Chicago Southside with some seriously amazing vocal work by
it''s 3 MC''s.
Saturday''s line-up started off with a band that had just filled
the Double Door walls only 3 days prior. 7th Vial''s sound was an
obvious indicator as to why. Their crystal clear instrumentation never
overcame the deep vocals nor did it sink into the background as the
electronic metal bands unique sound carried its way into the ear of
every audience member there. Armored Assault''s debut to the stage
definitely showed the best side of thrash metal at it''s worst, which
wasn''t any consolation to the audience of Arek Religa , a completely
instrumental band, storming the nation and winning more awards than
could be counted for best guitarist, best song, and so on. B.C.
certainly showed its strong stance in the world of progressive rock
with captivating vocals backed by a mature bass. The night was
automatically made lighter with the entrance of the younger mates of
Aleister''s White Stains, another thrash metal band that delivered its
music with a smile so as to create the feeling of just being served a
hot meal at Mickey D''s through the drive-thru window after a long day
at work. It certainly didn''t overpower the energy of Under Dover, as
they officially and proudly finished up the last set of the Emergenza
Music Festival weekend.
