CELLOFOURTE, THE REVENGE OF THE NERDS

Why a psycho-classical quartet's climbing Emergenza

The Emergenza festival sees some really fresh, unique bands take the stage throughout the competition. One band that I have seen this year really stood out as a horse among donkeys, Pittsburgh’s very own Cellofourte. This four-piece group features cello music in the psycho-classical vein (yeah, I coined that, thanks). The music flows like a turbulent sea, with strong crests hitting you while riding along on a constantly changing ebb and flow. This style secured their position as winner for Pittsburgh’s city final this season at Mr. Smalls Theatre, as well as regional final winners at Little Brother’s in Columbus, OH. Are they on the fast track to world domination? This style of rock-infused acoustic orchestral instrumentation is innovative but not their creation. The band sites influences like Apocalyptica as inspiration, showing that classical instrumentation can do more than the classical sound. Breaking the mold seems to be the mantra of this group, as the freedom of their modern sound sets them free from the traditional constraints that the orchestral side puts on them. The reaction that they receive at every show as new fans are gathered is equally different from the "golf claps" usually sustained at an orchestral performance. I believe their music has a universal appeal, and with their drive and determination success is inevitable!
