“OH, HOW THE DAYS FLY BY!

Last week of first round shows in Austin

Momo’s was the scene for some smokin’ hot bands this weekend. We saw a wide range of rock, as well as some acoustic selections and some eclectic styles hit the stage, and not a one disappointed. Friday, March 2nd fired off with the sweet Southern sounds of the Zak Perry Band. With vocals reminiscent of Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule) and an all around sound that encompasses all that is great about Southern Rock, they made it happen and with authority. The Subtle Creeps took the stage next, bringing a mix of northeastern grunge and today’s modern rock with a grassroots influence. Great playing from the guitar and solid all the way around! The funky groovin’ blues rock sound of Andy Macintyre & The Primal Groove set the mood for the next half an hour, with an outstanding front man who can wail both vocally and on his axe. Stellar sound! The Van Buren Boys set fire to the stage with a wild mix of Irish punk-reggae-Woody Guthrie. Greasy Irish Dub Punk? How do we name it… anyway, the versatility of this band was unmatched tonight, and they even brought a toy along to rock with. Kinetik grabbed the crowd at Momo’s by the balls and never failed to deliver. They represent solid Texas rock with melodic stabs, grinding guitars and energetic percussion and bass. Elizabeth Donihoo brought us back to earth with subtle and sultry vocals, floating effortlessly over the band like falling into a feather bed after a long day. I wasn’t put to sleep; rather, I was invigorated by the sweet sounds. One Trick Monkey finished off the night with modern rock with a focus on a melodic sound, à la Incubus or Alice in Chains. The singer projected mature, aggressive vocals over a tightly woven blend of sounds. Outstanding show! Our two-day tour closed Saturday with six bands taking their turn at Momo’s stage. The Clay Jeffrey Band started off the night with a laid-back acoustic sound with a taste of blues, Pink Floyd and whiskey. The vocals grabbed the wheel of this band and drove it into the sunset. Acaseofmondays rocked the house next, taking us on a ride from energetic peaks of anthemic rock to pensive, transient lows. Great work all around from these Season One vets! Our third band on the night was Voidland. What an original blend of psychedelic meets experimental rock! The vocals grabbed you by the throat but caressed you at the same time, and the blend of keys, guitar, bass and drums sounded great. Oh, and when I mention bass and drums, I’m talking one man, at the same time! Texas talent, baby. Kelly Doze Band took the stage next and started off with a sultry rock meets R&B mix, featuring spectacular, sexy vocals and in-the-pocket grooves from the rhythm section laid the foundation for a superb set. Bletzung impressed as always, with a simply brilliant set of modern rock. Now a three-piece, the introduction of a new drummer rounded things out perfectly, as the band rocked the Momo’s crowd. The night was wrapped up with 1000lbs of Sound, with a solid rockin’ set of American rock done right! The sound hit you like half of a ton (I kill me!) of rock bricks, and closed the night properly. Austin shall shine again soon, with the semi-finals at the Parish! Bring a stomach hungry for New Orleans style Cajun food and an ear hungry for some serious talent. See you there! One Love,
