Austin's dive into Avant-gardeness

Austin Round One Week Two

Austin, city of the unique, the avant-garde, the “special”… January has come in a flash and we are ready to spread the joy of music through the winter air. This weekend saw an emergency switch of clubs on Saturday, but with no major issues and the party went on the whole time. Flashbacks, flashbacks, flashbacks… diddly-doop, diddly-doop, diddly-doop…. Thursday, January 25th Thursday night was light on bands but heavy on talent. We fired things off with The James Austin Band. Their progressive-country sound tapped old school roots and new school attitude. Passionate vocals topped great skills from the band, and the harmonica was a great touch! Momo’s stage was next touched by band two in our night of genre diversity, taking us from country rock to hip-hop, and this band was RX Family. Jazzy funky smooth on the early 90s tip… with a twist of Philly. The three emcees kicked it with style, and the sax laid it back in the groove (nice beats, by the way). Great job from this whole troop! AUX graced the stage next. mTheir blend of mid-60s Kinks and U2 among others creates a sound unique to AUX. The vocals attacked and the energy never let down through the entire set. They definitely held the crowd in the palm of their collective hand! No premature labor this time (no pregnant door girl, what can I say), but Turbo Thunder Lizards a.k.a. T.T.L. hit the stage with intensity and melted faces at Momo’s. Their teeth showed throughout the set with shredding guitar and powerful bass, not to mention a superb drummer and vocalist. Cold from last season? Doubt it. These guys were hot! Friday, January 26th Friday was awesome! 21Down started the night off with a great alt-rock sound. The duet of vocals presented some outstanding harmonies and flew flawlessly over the great sound from the band. They were a perfect start to the evening! Aquafire hit the stage next, with a three piece alt-rock sound, accented by strong vocals and guitar. Okay, so far we’ve blown a hole the size of Rhode Island in he kick drum head… what else? Well, halfway through the set, DrawingBack lost the bass to a dead battery… Thanks to 21Down’s bassist for the loaner. You’re a champ. Anyway, DrawingBack rolled out a great set of original blues-rock, despite the technical difficulties. These young bucks made good with sweet, sultry guitar and steady vocals. No Such Thing took the stage by force, showing their veteran status ripping rugged vocals and really putting on a show. Hey, and they didn’t blow anything up (awwwww…)! Seriously, these guys rocked the house and the stage presence was unmatched this night. Our next band, Haydn Vitera showed us where Texas Rock meets Rock en Espanol with his outstanding performance. The voice, the fiddle and the entire band rocked the house at Momo’s. Randy Pavlock and Twenty-Four Seven hit the stage next, bringing soulful blues to the stage. Randy’s vocals were reminiscent of a raspy Elvis, with buttery lows and spiritual highs. The band really captured the blues element, which comes from deep inside and doesn’t come to everybody. The seventh band (of a seventh band, rawr) was none other than Black Oxygen. Balls out fucking metal, brutha, with a vengeance. Who needs a bass player? Not these guys. Despite the loss of their drummer last night to unmanageable circumstances, the bass player moved back to the drum kit and the guitar built walls four feet thick and the vocals blew a hole right through. Our final band on this full moon-esque night was 2-Hr Fire. Their set was definitely experimental, taking you from psychedelic trips through Neverland into the black hole of metal, transcending time and Myspace. The vocals grabbed you by the head and shook you retarded, and the band moved effortlessly through the entire set. Saturday, January 27th First thing to say abo
