Big Apple sounds good!

Two muscular nights at The Hook

Thursday, December 14th The show started late since there were four bands scheduled for that night. The first of them, Sinking North, describes their style as grunge. And that description is not far away from the truth – the band played a few rock songs with some early 90''s influences. The compositions were very melodic, energetic and got a great applause of the audience. The Spines came up next with very similar style. Interesting arrangements, vocals and rock and roll energy. They were more alternative than the first band but the atmosphere at The Hook didn''t change. It change a little with the next group of musicians: High Five performed more alternative-sounding songs. The guitarist had a very unique sound since they were using only clean sound with „natural” gain distortion. Good, simple but original arrangements were complemented with strong vocals. Really good band with really good songs. At the end of that short night we had even more hard and heavy sounds. Performance of Receptor was strong, melodic and loud. Spectators were pleased and they showed it at the very end of the show cheering the band which proved that rock''s not dead. Saturday, December 16th Saturday night began with Loomer – 4-piece indie rock band of very young guys. Fourteen years old drummer was excellent, he played with energy and feeling. They were using some weird sounds generated by virtual instruments triggered by keyboard controller. Arrangements and compositions were really original. The next band wasn't so young and original but very good sounding and solid. The Riffsurfers performed a few properly arranged songs. Vocals were strong and melodic, guitars energetic, rhythmic section very tight – good rock and roll band. Bound By Substance came up next playing a bunch of melodic tunes. The vocalist has a very strong and good voice, he also played keyboard in some of the songs. Their sound was as good as their stage presence – everything was appreciated by the crowd gathered at The Hook that night. The following band, Media Crime, brought even more rock and roll energy. Simple compositions, great guitar sound and stage appearance made a really good show. The crowd was pleased and musicians had fun on the stage. The mood changed a little with the last ensemble, Jimmy''s Ring. Their songs were slower, more delicate but also well arranged. They were using keyboards and violin to make the sound rich and interesting. But their performance wasn''t so energetic and the audience seemed to be little sleepy. At the end of that night we had an opportunity to watch and listen to Dirty Bath Water – special guest band. They are professional, have great vocalists and like to play games with the audience. Their show was exciting as usual but unfortunately they had no audience to play with – almost everyone left The Hook after Emergenza competition.
