THE COLD MAY HAVE CHILLED OUR BODIES,
BUT THE MUSIC WARMED OUR SOULS: Houston Round 1 Week 1
Winter in Houston? The cold may have chilled our bodies, but the music warmed our souls. It was the first weekend of shows for the 2007 season in Houston, and FBI Too was the hot spot for the latest edition of the rock show. Let''s take a look, shall we?
Thursday, November 3rd
Thursday night saw seven bands take the stage, and the first band to crack open the season for Houston was Summerside Project. Their mix of experimental and alternative rock shined with great transitions and a glossy sound led by great guitar work. Midnight Over Athens hit the stage with a similar sound, adding a blend of psychedelic to the mix. Also, the incorporated the "Switching of the Johns", showing their talent and versatility.
C-Hines and Purpose flipped the crowd over with an outstanding set of hip-hop and soul highlighted with wonderful vocal harmonies and a tight rhythm section.
Our fourth band of the night, Longpoint, came with the solid, alt-rock sound that is so popular with the kids these days. I was bummed not the hear the harmonies I heard on the album, but wasn''t disappointed at all with the quality jam.
Leonard Moses'' vocalist may have run out of steam, but the train kept on rollin''. They had a great stage presence and were a fun band to watch!
SXNXMOH brought vitalized lyrics and intricate style laid over phat beats. Nice accenting done by the keys, and congrats to the drummer on his upcoming wedding! Our first night''s cake was iced by Everything is Everything, who slammed into the crowd with a very solid performance. The vocalist worked the crowd over while the band kept them on their feet for the entire set. The fill-in drummer did a great job (the regular drummer broke her wrist). Brava!
Friday, December 1st
Southern Embers lit the fuse for Friday''s rock bomb, and lit it well. Passionate, driven original hard rock was their signature, and left everyone in the room impressed.
The Industry took the stage next, and despite missing a bass player and a top E string, rocked the crowd with a furious vocalist and a great atmosphere.
Jody Seabody and the Whirls rocked an electric set, switching things up and "popping" the drummer/guitarist/vocalist. Someone get that dude some water and something mild to eat! Ma and Pa, hide the kids, call earmuffs... whatever it is that you do, do it.
H-Town Breakdown knocked the real deal lyrics with the sloppy-kiss style of punk-hop.
El Gato Negrito stepped up with our first female vocalist of the night, entrancing us with the progressive indie sound that is signature for this band. Great work all-around!
The indie-acoustic, spirit moving sounds of Adley took us to another plane for their entire set. Talented vocals, sweet guitar and keyboard work all sat on top of well-timed drums to bring them to the forefront of the night.
Arms of Eternity played next, and definitely rocked FBI Too! Their energy was unparalleled on this night, and the music was at the top of its game.
Skandhas closed Friday for us, with probably the most passionate drummer of the weekend. Their sound was reminiscent of Nirvana at the peak of their career, and the crowd dug it.
Saturday, December 2nd
Saturday came with balls-out music all night long, and Of Raven & Ruins was the first to show. Their melodic metal was powerful yet refined, and their sound was a great way to fire off the night.
The Dead End Travelers pulled second, and played a very diverse set of alt rock, featuring superb guitar and vocals.
Through November''s Eyes burned the stage up with their tight guitar and outstanding drums, all led by a vocalist possessed by the gods of war.
Breed Society threw the 3-piece myth out the door, rocking FBI Too as much as anyone else tonight. Their rough-hewn original rock sound fired everyone<
