LOUD & AGGRESSIVE: LAST MANHATTAN WEEKEND AT THE HOOK
Other two awesome gigs in NY
Last Manhattan weekend at The Hook was short – two nights and eleven bands: seven on Thursday and four on Friday.
It doesn''t mean that we couldn''t watch and listen a great portion of good music.
Thursday, November 16th
The night started with The Pervs – alternative/punk rock band of three girls and one male drummer. Their songs were simple, energetic and raw sounding. The singer were rolling all over the stage and got big applause from the crowd.
The next show introduced a different mood: Ekayani And The Healing Band presented calm, precise and economic sounds of urban music. Their show was hypnotic and technically very proffesional which was appreciated by the audience, even by the people who came to see metal bands.
Face Down Dead came up next with aggressive and loud metal screaming which woke up those who had been hypnotized by previous group. The show was powerful, good sounding although the music itself was simple.
The following show given by the young guys from Pictures In Braille was also energetic and very powerful. The band played a few well arranged and performed alternative rock songs.
The vocalist was so excited that at the end of the set he almost lost his voice but it couldn''t stop him.
Schism wasn''t a typical band that performs at Emergenza Festival – they are Tool Tribute Band (I hope there''s no need to explain what Tool is), so we got what we''d expected: a bunch of well-known songs that sounded very close to the original.
The musicians and the audience were both excited.
That wasn''t the end of progressive metal sound that night: Semi Erotic Shapes performed interesting and well arranged songs, they were original, they were loud and they had very good stage presence. The vocalist used his own vocal effect which enriched the sound.
The last band performing that night was industrial metal band The Vivid Twisted. Like the previous band they used some digital effect but in this case the drummer used electronic drum pads and processors. The vocalist tried to interact with the audience between the songs, he was constantly changing his appearance by wearing different clothes.
Generally speaking that evening and night was very loud and aggressive, the audience was ground by sound but they seemed happy and really excited.
Friday, November 17th
On Friday night there was only four bands at The Hook but they gathered quite a crowd.
Waking was the first of them. Four piece rock band with very interesting, heavy but melodic arrangements played a few really good songs. Unfortunately they had some problems with guitarist''s effect board that caused a few minute break and their performance suffered although their music definitely has a big potential.
The following group, The Folk, gave the great show. All the musicians were really professional, the sound was really well balanced and the audience appreciated this cheering them after each song and wanted them to play more at the end.
The next group, Grimoire, exploaded with loud, heavy distorted thrash metal guitar sound. The songs were really fast and aggressive. One of the guitarists broke a string which caused a long break, but he borrowed an istrument and could finish the set.
At the end of the night we could watch the performance of Heather Park, R''n''B and soul seven piece band.
The vocalist was great, she has really well-trained and interesting voice that was complemented with two back-up singers.
The audience was really excited and gave them a great applause at the end of the night.
