An incredible first-round in Oklahoma City
Just started, and yet an exciting Emergenza experience
Emergenza held its first shows in the Sooner State last weekend at Bora Bora in Oklahoma City to find some excellent diversity in music.
Thursday
The weekend was kicked off on Thursday by some emo kids, Sun Also Rises, who had tons of energy and great guitar riffs. They also threw in some well placed harmonies to mesh with the emo screamo. They were followed up by Six Years Dead, one of the best metal bands I’ve seen this year. With a great crowd that fed the band excitement, they took over the night.
Analog Heartbreak mixed soulful vocals with a blues influenced guitar that made a sound completely their own that everyone could enjoy. Threshing Floor followed them up: a power trio with great presence, hard driving guitar and good vocals that put together a nice sound.
Monster Cloud is a great alt rock band. Nothing flashing, but good solid songs and a really good performance.
The night was finished off by the The Shacks, a group of wacky guys, playing wacky rock music that in some weird wacky way, people just seem to like.
Friday
Friday night was kicked off by the kids from Bryson Running. With a good rhythm section and nice guitar work, their singer took over the show. With golden locks that would remind some of a young Gwen, she did a good job of controlling the stage and has a voice ready to break out.
They were followed up by an amazing instrumental group by the name of The Non. Layer upon layer of texture, all four musicians demonstrate their proficiency on the canvas that is their music. This band got every single person in the club to raise a hand in their favor.
After losing their bass player a couple of days before the show, Brokempty was forced to do a three piece acoustic set that went over well in the middle of the night. Blest Abomination took the stage with makeup and leather wrist bands filled with 16 penny nails shredded the crowd to pieces for 25 minutes.
The night was finished off by a great college band called Reido. From jam band to country band, with rock and blues, their set of original tunes had something in it for everyone and had the crowd dancing to a couple of encores.
Saturday
So Far Good started off Saturday night with a great set of rock music that impressed most of the audience and sent them into the next round. They were followed by Ear Candy, a band of experienced musicians that put together nice songs and have a very charismatic front man.
Unfolded Earth took the stage with a good base of support at the show and used that energy to play a set worthy of gaining new fans from the crowd. Cymbaline Complexion set out to pull the crowd into their brand of post-hardcore with good guitar harmonies and driving percussion rhythms.
Proof Theory followed them up with a very tight metal sound that even the inexperienced metal listener would approve of. They were followed up by the metal/punk of The Costanzas. They played a fast set of songs with down to earth lyrics and no frills musicianship ending with my favorite song of the night, Jagermonster.
The night and the weekend was finished off by Picture Perfect Homicide. Another metal band with a very tight rhythm section and great guitar riffs proving that the metal in OK is more than just that.
