It all started back in 2006, in Delft, the Netherlands, when Ties Vosselman (bass), Wouter van Kaam (vocals) and Bas van Hoorn (guitars) decided to start a trash/death metal band. They found Wander, a great drummer. First the band started to play some covers of their favourite bands, like Mötorhead, At the Gates and Mayhem, also they made some first attempts to write their own material. Thus Maelstrom was born.
Then the opportunity for a first gig arrived, supporting Dutch rock band Rock Morton. To play a solid set the band asked Ran Schonewille to join for this gig as a second guitarist. Practicing the songs they found out Ran gave an extra dimension and vibe to their sound, so he was asked to stay as a permanent member.
In 2008 and 2009 Maelstrom played a couple of highly acclaimed gigs at places such as JJ Music House (Zoetermeer), café 545 (Ede), Nederland 3 (Wateringen) and Lazaru’s (Leiden). They recorded a first demo cd (simply titled Maelstrom) and some rough material that will be worked out to release a second demo.
