Imperial Valley is a three-man band formed in Houston, Texas, in December of 2005. While being favorably compared to such hard rock acts as Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana, IV prefers to see itself as a unique force in the modern music scene. Descriptions of Imperial Valley’s sound often include words like intense, aggressive, and catchy, but vocalist/guitarist Kevin Newsom prefers to see things in more simplistic terms.

“I’ve heard a lot of descriptions of us, but I think the most accurate is passionate”, says Newsom. “A lot of bands today are concerned with the way they look more than the music they play. We’ll let them get awards for best make-up and wardrobe. We prefer to focus on writing quality music and putting on a good show for the crowd.”

IV loves to put on a great live show. Newsom’s forceful singing voice and powerfully over-driven lefty guitar often make him seem like a man possessed, offering a sharp contrast to his mild-mannered offstage persona. It looks as if he squeezes every ounce of energy from his guitar and voice, almost as if each performance is his last.

This forceful and captivating delivery is complimented by the crafty, cerebral tones of Matt Altizer’s bass guitar. The quiet bassist’s melodies are interwoven throughout each Imperial Valley tune, providing a depth and drive that most rock bands could only dream of.

IV’s rhythm section is anchored by the power of drummer Chris Rodgers, whose hard-hitting style brings to mind past legends Dave Grohl and John Bonham. Watching their live shows, one gets the impression that Rodgers is trying to pound the drums into submission throughout the set. “Our music is fairly aggressive,” says Rodgers. “I don’t worry too much about playing with finesse or twirling sticks in the air. I just go out there and hit ‘em hard.”

And hitting it hard is Imperial Valley’s main focus. Whether it’s expanding their presence in the Houston music scene or venturing out to play clubs and venues outside the State of Texas, IV plans on pushing themselves past their limitations, and seeing just how far good music and intense performances can take them.
