How did you hear about Emergenza and what made you want to take part?
We hadn’t heard about Emergenza until we received an email asking us if we were interested in being a part of it. We looked Emergenza up, and were so excited to accept- to play alongside other unsigned musicians of all different genres, and to have a chance at playing in Germany! We couldn’t say no.
Tell us a bit about the song-writing process? Does the music come first and then the lyrics, or do the lyrics influence the sound of each song?
Our song writing process is pretty simple. Lachie produces electronic instrumentals, and I (Alex) write melody and lyrics on top of it. We love seeing it all come together- sometimes Lachie will write an instrumental about something specific, and I will be inspired to write lyrics on top of it that are completely different. But sometimes Lachie’s intended meaning
of the song will match up with the lyrics that I write, which is really cool.
How did the band come together?
We are brother and sister, and having grown up in a musical family, we have always loved making music together. We started making music as Bonn Fire when Lachie started to explore electronic sound production. In 2012, one day after school we wrote our first track ‘Chasing’. We did it for fun, and didn’t think anything would come of it. But a year later, we wrote another
track ‘Turn Around’ to enter into Triple J Unearthed High. Our song got played on Triple J Unearthed, which was really exciting, and it spurred us on to keep on creating more music together.
Which of your songs do you enjoy performing the most?
We both enjoy performing an unreleased track called ‘Taiji’ which Lachie wrote after watching the documentary The Cove – it’s about dolphins. Taiji is probably our biggest and fullest track, and we often close with it, so it’s fun.
For me (Alex) it changes every time, depending on how I’m feeling. I like performing fresh tracks, and we’ve got a few of those for Emergenza.
If you could have played at any music festival (past or the present) which would it have been?
We love Aussie music, so I think both of us would love to play at Splendour in the Grass, any year! First of all, it would mean that we could attend the festival (we always miss out on tickets). And it would be amazing to mingle with the greats of the Australian alternative music scene.
Finally, how does it feel when the crowd are alive and rocking out to your show?
I don’t think either of us imagined Bonn Fire happening- it really all fell together- so it feels pretty surreal each time we perform. There’s always a bit of fear there whenever you are putting yourself out there creatively, but that’s what makes it so thrilling. Music has made such an impact on both of our lives, so if our music can make anyone in the audience feel
something, that’s epic.
