CARPE DIEM will play live @170 Russell on Sunday December 13th for Emergenza Festival final!
EXPLAIN TO US WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT YOUR BAND FROM ANY OTHER BAND IN YOUR GENRE?
I believe that what makes us different from other bands in our Genre is that we don't really fit into any genre. there are so many influences within the band from Black Sabbath to Beethoven, Mozart to Marillion, I could keep going, but each of these influences finds a way into our song writing and performances.
WHAT FIRST GOT YOU INTO SONGWRITING AND PLAYING LIVE?
Songwriting seems to have been in my life for years, as a way to get frustrations out of my system and to tell stories, also girls seemed to like it too!! All members of the band contribute to the song writing once the germ of an idea takes place, and we really enjoy the process of telling each other how wrong they are when they contribute ideas.
Playing live is our chance to show off, to impress wives, girlfriends, anyone we know. Another great thing about playing live is finding out whether a song really works or not, what sometimes sounds good in rehearsal can really bomb when played live, and audience response really fashions our set, so the fans response really means a lot. First playing live was a really tough time proving to have a great laxative effect upon certain band members, I still get very nervous before playing. Our Keyboard player is a natural, and bounces around like the energizer rabbit.
WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT A CARPE DIEM GIG?
A Diem gig is a great event as we have a load of fun and try to get the audience to join us. The other good thing is that no one really knows what is going to happen as we do have one or two unusual characters within the band, the drummer is capable of doing and saying anything...
WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE DONE TOGETHER AS A BAND?
Craziest thing done as a band was buying a battered old caravan and decking it out as a rehearsal room, it survived a good few years before being put into retirement. Also setting fire to timpani drumsticks to play a song, very nearly brought the house down, the venue owner was not too happy with us. Also, the Drummer (again) breaking through a security cordon to meet a TV host we had written a song about so that he could give her a copy of the song, we nearly got a TV gig from that stunt...Finally incurring the wrath of several parents when they heard their kids singing one of our songs (Idol), {check out the Emergenza site}, the parents thought that it was a very inappropriate song, I let the lead guitarist take the rap for that although it had nothing to do with him.
WHAT'S THE MOST INSANE PART OF EMERGENZA SO FAR?
The most insane part about Emergenza so far is getting to the Vic. final, also the support we have had from fans along the way, it really has been tremendous.
HOW'S IT FEEL TO BE IN THE STATE FINALS? AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT PLAYING @ 170 RUSSELL?
Playing the state final is a surreal experience for us all, as I said earlier we are all really excited. On a personal note as the old man in the band I am delighted to be doing something I want to do instead of have to do.
IF YOU HAVE THE DESIRE TO SHOUT OUT TO ANY OF THE BANDS OR SAY ANY THANKS, DO SO HERE:
The Emergenza experience has been a great opportunity to meet several bands and talk with them about playing live and writing also learning from them.
We are looking forward to the final and to a great night of music, and feel honoured to be a part of it.
