The interview with The Frequency from Adelaide, live @Fowler's Live on Thursday, July 9th for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF YOUR BAND: WHEN WAS IT BORN AND HOW?
The Frequency started in 2011 when Tom (currently plays guitar, previously played bass) and I started jamming at his house. We got someone to play guitar but he has since parted ways with the band. We reshuffled the line up as to how it is today (Lewis - bass, Tom - guitar and myself - drums, vocals) and it's been that way since 2013.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
As a whole, we are into a lot of the same, and also a lot of different bands. Collectively we all love bands like The Strokes, Fall Out Boy and
Muse, but we have varied individual tastes too. I am into a much more blues-based style, where as Tom and Lewis are into a more
modern/alternative style. That said, we all appreciate our collective musical differences and I believe it works in our favour, instead of
putting up a road block in our creativity, if you will.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
We've always been hesitant to call ourselves a metal band, mostly because none of us really identify with that genre. Our EP that was released
earlier this year leans on that style but also incorporates alternative and punk styles too. As we as musicians change too, so does our style, so I
don't think there's any one way to pin us down. And believe me, we've had some pretty lengthy discussion about this!
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
Personally, the first two songs on our EP (Contamination and Bloodshot, http://soundcloud.com/thefrequencyband1) are the most special to me. They were songs we opened with after we wrote them at our next two gigs, and they've grown so much since then. I think they really personify our energy as a band quite well, while also keeping our melodic sensibilities intact.
ON AVERAGE, HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND PLAYING AND HOW CAN YOU BALANCE THIS WITH YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
Together we aim to practice at least twice a week. Because of school it's not always as much as time as we'd like, but we take what we can get to
balance it with our studies. By ourselves, we all play whenever we can. We all love our music and this really comes out, both individually and
together.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
We were contacted by email and after we considered what the festival offered, we decided, "Hey, what the hell, we might actually have a shot!"
And so we went for it. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, as they say.
DOES THE COMPETITION WITH OTHER BANDS WORRY YOU OR GIVE YOU ENERGY?
A bit of both, I think. There is plenty of talent here in Adelaide, and I know that the other bands won't disappoint. That said, I am confident in us
and I know that we will give a strong show. We'll just have to see how it pans out!
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
It's not that we expect anything as much as we're just excited to get up and play in front of a type of audience we've never had before. It's
exciting and it's refreshing, compared to playing in small pubs and such. We are definitely looking forward to it!
