The interview with St. Morris Sinners from Adelaide, live @Fowler's Live on Thursday, July 9th for Emergenza Festival Australia:
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BAND: HOW AND WHEN WAS IT BORN?
St. Morris Sinners was formed in Adelaide in December of 2011
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN? AND HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM THE MOMENT YOU BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER?
I (Stephen) can't vouch for everybody's earliest musical interests and endeavours. But I first got into music as a very young child listening to
Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin my dad had a very old taste comparative to his age and loved all the old crooners..Then in my teenage years I
discovered bands such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who and Cream and many other bands from this period who were a huge influence. But I didn't begin playing music until I was 17. I am the lead singer and lyricist, I had a band previous to this one. It was jamming with these guys that I got into songwriters such as David McComb from The Triffids, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Jonathan Richman and Ray Davies from The Kinks who would be some of my biggest influences purely from their songwriting abilities.
HOW DO YOU CREATE A SONG? (WHO WRITES LYRICS, WHO MUSIC, ETC...?)
I write the lyrics then I meet up with the band and workshop my poetry. Django our guitarist usually comes up with the riffs but it is a very natural
process; we all contribute to the process of giving our songs the St. Morris sound.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO PEOPLE WHO DOESN'T KNOW YOU?
I find it too difficult and generally don't, we let the recordings and live shows speak for themselves.
WHICH BANDS INSPIRED AND INSPIRE YOU?
I named a few above but they are mainly personal influences.. the bands sound evolved listening to The Gun Club, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Henry Flynt, The Modern Lovers, Captain Beefheart & his Magic Bnad and Morphine just to name a few collective band influences.
Django Rowe our guitarist and Angus Mason percussionist are both Jazz musicians in the Jazz Conservatorium at Adelaide uni, I would like to
believe that they chuck some of their influences into the mix..though they would probably hit me for that comment. George our Bass Player loves
country music The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Roy Orbison and all that jazz. So yeah we all have very eclectic music tastes..but it all
seems to fit.
TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
Well....you'll just have to find out.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
We thought why not I guess..a festival supporting unsigned musicians is something The Sinners takes their hats off to.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
Excited..I guess should be a cracker.
