The interview with Explain Orange from Adelaide, live @Fowler's Live on Wednesday, July 8th for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR BAND NAME: WHO CHOSE IT AND WHY?
Our band name, Explain Orange, is a kind of symbol of our undefined style, as we don’t always keep restricted to the same genre and individually we often write songs that are going in the opposite direction than what the rest of the band might be writing for. However, the more that we play together, we find that we are becoming more musically adjusted and finding mutual influences and styles.
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BAND: HOW AND WHEN WAS IT BORN?
We first formed in March 2014 for a school assessment task. This became our first performance opportunity as we performed at a school event, The Big Day In, where we were assessed by our teacher and motivated by a supportive crowd. After this, we found that we enjoyed playing together and that we wanted to keep getting together as a band for practices. This then lead us to playing at Open Mic Nights and, eventually, bigger venues and festivals in Adelaide, such as The Gov’s main stage, Scorcher fest and now Emergenza.
We are planning to record our EP sometime this year with some close friends of ours who have a start-up recording label, Swirl Records. We already have some demos of some of our songs up on SoundCloud, Band Camp and YouTube, but we hope to release some better quality recordings including all of our original tracks.
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN? AND HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM THE MOMENT YOU BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER?
The four of us have been friends from the beginning of high school, as we have all attended music lessons together since Year 8. Until last year, we had never played together as a group. From our first performance at school we understood that we worked well together and that most of all we enjoyed playing and writing with each other.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
There are many musical performers and acts that we look towards for our own inspiration, the main influences being Arctic Monkeys, The Cure, Silverchair and Dinosaur Jr., among others. Although the four of us all have our own musical tastes, genres and styles of music, we strive to use these influences as a way to create our own identity and sound and to inspire and express ourselves as a group.
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
The first songs that we ever wrote, Suitcase, Never Know (A Dad to Remember) and Immature, have been the biggest crowd pleasers and always attract the crowd to sing along. Additionally, Weezer’s Say It Ain’t So and The Cure’s Just Like Heaven are songs that we have always found ourselves covering when we have the opportunity to.
WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION TO WRITE SONGS (EVENTS, MOOD....)?
Our songs usually start out as ideas and progressions that we create individually and bring to the table later on at band practise. We then collaborate together to make our different roles/instruments in the song interesting and make sure that they all work together. Our songs are usually written based on our personal experiences, for example at school or our social lives, but sometimes we write songs just for the fun of it or because we like how they sound.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
We received an email from Emergenza staff who complimented our music and presented us with the opportunity to participate in the festival. We thought it was too good of an opportunity to not take, with all the benefits, exposure and fun it will bring us. Though most of all, it allows us to put on some awesome shows for our fans and everyone else there.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
Our main expectation is that we just have fun and enjoy ourselves, which has always been our underlying motivation. Become the winners of the festival/competition would be a fantastic opportunity for us, but it isn’t as large a motivation for us as it is to enjoy our time on stage. We also hope to gain more publicity and community recognition in the music scene so that we can have more opportunities to perform in the future.
