The interview with Tailor Birds from Melbourne, live @ 24Moons on Thursday, June 11th for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR BAND NAME: WHO CHOSE IT AND WHY?
The name went through a couple of years of changes, whilst in the early stages. It started out whilst studying postgrad performance at the VCA.
Originally more of a contemporary classical act, the Gestalt Ensemble, shifted to the Java Cottons, and then ended up with Tailor Birds. Tailor
Birds are these amazing birds that make nests out of leaves. They are creative, almost magical, and that's what our show is about - every
evolving and developing, and quite magical. A true experience. Felt like it fit.
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BAND: HOW AND WHEN WAS IT BORN?
Born in 2012, but in creation a couple years before, we've been progressing over the years with various tours, recording, a few festivals etc. After
working for the Rosie Burgess trio, Hussy Hicks, Sally Dastey, Marshall OKell, Tailor Birds came about from work with other artists, and wanting to build something new, and visually engaging. We now have debut album out, plus live ep, and new single about to be released, with jazz drummer Daniel Brates, new vocalist/guitarist having jumped on board Anthony Winnick, and myself Sophie Kinston on electric violin, loops, foley etc. We also have producer Rick van der Ree, who produced our first album, over in Holland.
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN? AND HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM THE MOMENT YOU BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER?
Been playing for years, and now things are changing quite quickly, the more material we write.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Sigur Ros, Bjork, Muse, Kronos Quartet, Gorillaz.
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
Of our songs? We've been writing a lot of new material lately, with a full second album currently in the process of being recorded. I guess they are
all special, but in different way - Mabel for it's mammoth storylike quality and the audience falls into the music almost, Marmalade Home for
its sense of empowerment, and new single, Winters Fall for its' unique moment in time that the song describes. They all have their unique energy.
WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION TO WRITE SONGS (EVENTS, MOOD....)?
life, travel, people on the street, images in passing, and of course, love.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
We've done quite a bit of touring and recording, but it's always good to try new things. A friend did it last year, and you never know what these
kinds of things bring. I guess I'm an eternal optimist, amongst all the noise. :)
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST
EMERGENZA CONCERT?
Not sure what to expect - am open to who knows what. Exciting that's for sure.
