The interview with The Desert Suns from Sydney, live @The Lair @ Metro Theatre on Wednesday, May 20th for Emergenza Festival Australia:
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BAND: HOW AND WHEN WAS IT BORN?
The Desert Suns came together through friends and friends of friends in 2013. Soon after we took up a creative residency at Stage Door Productions, Sydney.
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN? AND HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM THE MOMENT YOU BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER?
Each band member comes from a different musical background. Some played in alt rock bands, others dabbled in acoustic duos & the like. Our band is a culmination of the right people, at the right time sharing a common creativity that we all enjoy.
HOW DO YOU CREATE A SONG? (WHO WRITES LYRICS, WHO MUSIC, ETC...?)
Our guitarist, Mark Pickering, brings ideas, lyrics and demos to the table. From here its individual interpretation and collective expression
that guides the music to become its own thing.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO PEOPLE WHO DOESN'T KNOW YOU?
We're really happy to say our sound is a work in progress, constantly changing, morphing and developing into something that sounds more and more
like The Desert Suns all the time. Currently it's a mash of melodic rock and groovin' blues with a dash of psychedelia.
WHICH BANDS INSPIRED AND INSPIRE YOU?
Our influences are wonderfully broad. We're a funnel of good music and experiences that have brought us to this point in time. The Chris Robinson
Brotherhood, Townes Van Zandt, A perfect circle and First Aid Kit are a snippet of the artists we enjoy listening to as fans.
TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
We sit within in the scope of rock but aren't something you will hear from anyone else. With Janine's distinct vocals fronting a heavy back beat
driven by our drummer, Damon Neame, and the grooves, provided by our bass player Cameron Allan. Its a sound that washes over you and is unique to our ears.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE
PART IN IT?
We were fortunate enough to be contacted by Emergenza to be part of this experience. Thank you Emergenza, you're doing a great thing and we look forward to spreading the word.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST
EMERGENZA CONCERT?
To have fun and soak up the vibe of this international event. Who knows, anything can happen.
