The interview with Balladeere from Sydney, live @The Lair @ Metro Theatre on Thursday, April 23rd for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF YOUR BAND: WHEN WAS IT BORN AND HOW?
It was born sitting with a guitar in my room writing songs. From there a knew I had to push to share some music with the world. Countless hours of
writing, practise, arrangement and recording brought about an ep under my solo name Jake Berry Music called 'Glossolalia' which is now starting to
become the band project Balladeere as I get a few friends to play alongside me at Emergenza and hopefully a few other performances this year.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
They range from metal to electronic to folk and back. At the moment I'm listening to Oceans Ate Alaska, revisiting Peter, Bjorn and John and
looking forward to see Sufjan Stevens play in May.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
I guess I'd say it's a classy mix of jazz infused folk to resonate with a city landscape. I work in the city so I don't feel like my folk music reflects grassy fields or countryside like a lot of other folk. It's folk with jazz and subtle rock influences that comes from working in the city and enjoying its culture.
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
All the songs are based on personal experiences and emotions. Mysterious is about not trusting the world to tell us who to be and what to believe.
ON AVERAGE, HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND PLAYING AND HOW CAN YOU BALANCE THIS WITH YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
A couple of nights a week and occasionally a weekend for me are invested in music - singing and playing guitar. It's a hard balance because it takes
time out of all the other stuff which is a struggle to fit around work already with music involved.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
Francesca from Emergenza contacted my Facebook band page with an invitation to check it out, so I did and found it would be awesome to take part in.
DOES THE COMPETITION WITH OTHER BANDS WORRY YOU OR GIVE YOU ENERGY?
It doesn't worry me. We'll do our best to win and be happy with that I think. For me it's about personal best because there no telling what to
expect. This will also be our first gig as a band outfit so I'm not expecting to take the title but we'll try and if we do I'd be stoked but if not we'll hold our heads up.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZACONCERT?
I expect it to be fun. I also expect it to be a good learning curve. We're a bit nervous but otherwise really excited.
