The interview with Dime from Sydney, live @The Lair @ Metro Theatre on Thursday, April 23rd for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF YOUR BAND: WHEN WAS IT BORN AND HOW?
Gianluca was in one of my English language classes in Sydney, we both like Alterbridge and decided that was a good enough reason to have a jam. Jaume was a guitarist also looking to play. He and I got together first then Gianluca came in on drums. We both had material and demos and reinvented the songs. It’s happened quickly, so with origins in Italy, Spain and the Blue Mountains Dime is born in 2015.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
We have pretty broad influences; Jau likes music from Jimmy Hendrix to Chemical Brothers, blues and Jazz. Gianluca likes metal and rock; bands like AB and Nightwish. I like soul, blues and rock, singers such as Otis Redding, Jeff Buckley and Ed Kowalczyk.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
Well there is a lot of groove, breaks and riffing, a kind of dirty, rocky mix with spaces for melody. There is a stoner feel that explodes in places to rebuild. It’s simple with a focus on sound and letting the song breath and be what it is. Stoner rock is the point our tastes most strongly meet but there are elements of metal and blues in there too. We just want to do our own thing.
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
Probably 3 feet because its fun to play with the boys and reminds me of when I wrote the song. Being in a foreign city and taking in the situation, the people and place I was in. It’s about living to tell the tale I suppose.
ON AVERAGE, HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND PLAYING AND HOW CAN YOU BALANCE THIS WITH YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
It varies, we have been getting together on the weekends to play but a lot is done at home individually. Finding a balance is important, you can draw a lot from everyday life and put that into your music. For us its something to look forward to, getting in a room and seeing what comes forth with a new band.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
I saw a friend’s band play at Emergenza last year, the night provided a diverse range of acts and was entertaining and fun with quality music. I thought it would be a good event to be involved with.
DOES THE COMPETITION WITH OTHER BANDS WORRY YOU OR GIVE YOU ENERGY?
It doesn’t worry us. We want to make the most of the opportunity to play a set that the audience and hopefully other bands enjoy. We are looking forward to playing and going as far as we can. We just want to rip into it.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
We expect it to be an awesome night of music from start to finish and we are going to have a listen to what other people are doing. The venue is great and we can’t wait!
