The interview with Feytalistic from Sydney, live @The Lair @ Metro Theatre on Wednesday, April 22nd for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR BAND NAME: WHO CHOSE IT AND WHY?
We were in the process of deciding on a name for our band and Vince and I had traveled to Sydney for a set of gigs for our Acoustic Duo.
The night we arrived in Sydney we went to the local Sporting Club to have dinner, we sat near the TAB and decided to play a few games of KENO. We were going through names we had thought of but none really had the right fit. Vince was looking up at the KENO screen and happened to glance at one of the horse races and noticed a horse name which he was really taken with . . . . Feytalistic! Then we realised her silks were green (which is my favourite colour)! The name just felt right and from then on our band was known as Feytalistic.
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BAND: HOW AND WHEN WAS IT BORN?
Vince and I were playing together in an Acoustic Duo and had been writing originals for a while. We finally decided it was time to record. At the time I wasn't really happy with our Duo name and was considering a new name. One day when we were rehearsing for our studio time we discussed the need for a real guitarist so that Vince would be able to move back to bass. There was really no other option than our great friend Nicky Wall who from that moment (without his knowledge) became our third member!! The three of us recorded at SongCave Studios in Lawson and this concreted our band as a Trio.
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN? AND HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM THE MOMENT YOU BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER?
All three of us have been interested in music our whole lives but picking up instruments at different ages. For me my Grandfather was a
fulltime musician and my Mum was determined that I would be able to play. She put me into piano lessons at the age of 6 and really, although I did fight with her about practicing, I never looked back! I loved playing and creating music, especially once I got to the point where I was able to play and sing with others.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Umm, Wow! There really are so many and across so many different genres but here are a few . . . Natalie Merchant, Jackson Browne, Nickel Creek, Todd Rundgren, Master’s Apprentices , Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, Powderfinger, Evanescence, Counting Crows, and Coldplay . . .
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
As far as our originals go, they are all special to me because they all contain part of me. They were all written about something in my life, something which has made me the person that I am today!
WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION TO WRITE SONGS (EVENTS, MOOD....)?
My inspiration comes from life. Often a line will pop into my head about something that I have lived through and the song builds from there!
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
I found out about The Emergenza Festival through Google! We were looking for opportunities to play and it was in the first few results of my search. Once I read through what it was all about I decided it sounded like something our band should get involved in!!
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
I am expecting a great experience! The first venue looks GREAT! We have just begun playing in Sydney and the venues are very different from our home area of Gulgong and Mudgee!! We are all hugely excited and can’t wait for our turn on the stage!!
