The interview with Copious from Melbourne, live @the Espy on April 16th for Emergenza Festival Australia:
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BAND: HOW AND WHEN WAS IT BORN?
We've been friends since we were kids and it was just the natural course of things to make a band together, Allicia a guitarist and myself a singer. We had our first show at the Espy in 2012, but before that we were doing small local shows and gigs for our friends.
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN? AND HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM THE MOMENT YOU BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER?
In an ABBA song there's a lyrics "my mother said I could dance before I could walk and sing before I could talk" that's definitely relevant for me, I've been singing since I can remember and I did singing lessons for ten years with an amazing teacher who really promoted songwriting and finding ones own sound. For Allicia she's been playing guitar for as long as I've known her, and it's in her blood to be music-minded. When we first started playing together it was after school in Allicia's garage and we were just playing random covers and having a laugh, it wasn't until I suggested for her to play one of my songs that we really got rolling, and now when we write our songs are 1000% better when we write together, we just mesh.
HOW DO YOU CREATE A SONG? (WHO WRITES LYRICS, WHO MUSIC, ETC...?)
Sometimes I'll sit there and scribble down some lyrics, show them to Leash and she'll start playing something, or it'll be the other way around, or I'll pick up a guitar - play some really crappy riff (I'm terrible on guitar) and she'll pick it up and improve on it, make the flow better. We write music in what I'd consider an organic way, there's no real set template, we just do it.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO PEOPLE WHO DOESN'T KNOW YOU?
An acoustic guitar playing rock/blues riffs with a singer that's somewhat P!nk-esque. We generally play blues-y ballads with a political or extremely emotional twist.
WHICH BANDS INSPIRED AND INSPIRE YOU?
We're both very eclectic in our music tastes and what inspires us can be anything from golden oldies like Stevie Wonder to up and comers like Chet Faker.
TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
We always play with rhythm and we've been trying out stamping as we've lost our drummer, we're trying to compensate for that fullness you get with a drummer. My "good-luck charm" is a top-hat that I wear to every single show, it's a bit of a joke that if I didn't have it I would be doomed to have a bad show.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
I got an email from one of the organisers and it sounded like a great opportunity. We've already played at the Espy so our main goal is to make it to the next stages. There are so many great musicians in Melbourne so it's definitely going to be a challenge, but we're ready!
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
We love the set up of the show and even if we don't get further we're just happy to support anything that gives little acts a go. We expect to play a great show and have some fun and be entertaining and thought-provoking - that's all we can ask for.
