The interview with Kite from Sydney, live @The Lair @ Metro Theatre on April 22nd for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF YOUR BAND: WHEN WAS IT BORN AND HOW?
Kite was born in 2014 after lead singer and high school teacher Jasmine Wilson went searching for creative and talented musicians who shared her insatiable passion for music on all levels - songwriting, arranging and performing. After a few months of jamming with different musicians, Kite was born. It began with Jasmine and Viet Anh-Nguyen songwriting together, followed shortly after by Gaetan Frichot on bass. The final members of the band, Jazz Garnett (guitar) and Gilbert Prinny (drums) would join later.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Our music influences are very diverse! Jasmine grew up listening to a lot folk, soul and 90s alt pop. Artists such as Joni Mitchell, Bjork, Seal,
Annie Lennox, Michael Jackson, Sade and Kate Bush influenced her songwriting sensibilities. Once she brings her raw songs to the band, the
guys sink their teeth in and add their flavours! Jazz (guitarist), for example is influenced by a lot of alt rock and loves artists such as Bowie
and Lana Del Rey, whilst Gaetan (bass player) is influenced by his love of reggae and funk. So we aren't one definable style, which is a good thing!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
In a nutshell, think something like Florence Welch walking into a bar having a jam with David Bowie, Cat Empire, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and a bit
of Bjork to boot. Our music is very peculiar, yet also very balanced! All the songs are connected by Jasmine's voice, which sounds like a weird mix
between Kate Bush, Michael Jackson and PJ Harvey. Our style is an amalgamation of all our personal tastes and musical styles. Being five very
outspoken individuals, that's a lot of style! Imagine indie pop, pop/folk, alt rock and jazz funk fusion with hints of classical influence mashed
together, and you have Kite!
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
We all have our favourite songs. All our songs are so different (to us anyway!) that we find it hard to say. They all capture a certain mood or
story concurrent in our lives right now. But, if we had to pick, I'd say Free-falling. It's got an eerie balance between delicate and destructive
that matches the image of falling and flying through the air when we play it!
ON AVERAGE, HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND PLAYING AND HOW CAN YOU BALANCE THIS WITH YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
How much we play varies on what's happening in our lives, but generally, we aim to meet once or twice a week at our studio. In that time we are
quite productive and jam out new material or revise old songs. It's actually easy to balance because going to rehearsal late at night after a
long day at work never feels like work - it's something we all really enjoy and are passionate about!
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
We had the good fortune of playing with Origami Birds last year at the Roxbury Hotel. Later in the year we saw their show at Emergenza and we
decided it would be a fun event to be a part of!
DOES THE COMPETITION WITH OTHER BANDS WORRY YOU OR GIVE YOU ENERGY?
Energy, definitely! The only competition in music that we worry about is putting on the best live show we can for our audience - if that is
accomplished, well then, that's all we could ask for!
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
We expect to have fun getting to meet and greet the other bands, catch up with old friends and fans who've come to check out our show. We mainly are just itching to get out and play after being in the studio for so long recording our singles!!
