The interview with Zuma, live @ the Espy on Thursday, March 19th for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR BAND NAME: WHO CHOSE IT AND WHY?
Jess our guitarist and his brother James our bassist came up with the name, it was relevant to a band their father has listened to for decades, we all agreed on it instantaneously!
PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BAND: HOW AND WHEN WAS IT BORN?
The concept of Zuma first started with Jess, James and Darcy (guitarist, bassist, drummer) getting together on a regular basis to jam just for fun. We then realised how much we loved to make music no matter how good or bad and decided to keep pursuing it. Then early 2014 Imogen joined us on vocals and we haven't looked back since!
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN? AND HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED FROM THE MOMENT YOU BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER?
Our interest in music all began at quite a young age for all of us. We were all brought up around some form of music weather it be our parents playing instruments or hearing vinyls crackle in the back ground. When we all formed in early 2014 we all clicked and everything seemed to gel. Which was great as we had gone through a few members before hand. I think that the chemistry and connection you share with your fellow band mates plays a big role in not only writing but also bringing your material to the public.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Tame impala, Foals, Pond
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
Fragile would definitely be up there for all of us. When we first came up with the concept and got together to jam it, it worked straight away, it was one of the easiest tracks for us as a whole band to lay down, once Jess came up with the skeletal backbone for it, then Imy laid down her vocals to it it all just seemed to flow really well.
WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION TO WRITE SONGS (EVENTS, MOOD....)?
We get inspired by watching music, other bands preform that we are into, we love how passionate they are and it kind of makes us determined to try and write the best music we can. Also the ability to influence or affect someone else and their emotions is a big inspiration for us and is an amazing part of playing music.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
We heard of the Festival through various friends of ours. We decided to take part in it because we believe it gives young up and coming artists a great opportunity to showcase their talent!
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
We expect it to be a lot of fun! We are feeling good about our first upcoming Emergenza concert, it will be a great opportunity for us!
