As The Bloody Mummers are warming up for their gig at The Factory Theatre, they take a break to catch us up on what’s been going on with the band since the first round. Among other things, we find out exactly what they’re doing to make their live show even more explosive this go ‘round. Don’t miss out this Saturday, November 15th, and for now, content yourself with this pre-show interview with the band:
FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET TO SEE YOU IN THE FIRST ROUND, CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO YOUR BAND THE BLOODY MUMMERS?
The Bloody Mummers, we are three young gentlemen (Jack Newman, Jem Hoppe-Smith, Eamonn Briers) who enjoy making loud tuneful noises, usually with instruments. It turns out that some people are not opposed to letting us do this on a stage in front of other people; we will assuredly not disappoint them. We like playing good, loud rock n roll, and I suspect our most obvious influences would include Weezer, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin and the like. Having fun is of paramount importance, last I checked in the official "Liste of Rules and 'Greements of thee Bande".
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
A personal highlight for me (Jem) was getting to play through a rather large, beautiful and pants-wettingly loud Marshall 8x10 bass amp, which is exactly 8x more explosimatory than I am used to. Really, though, getting to hear something of a response to our music was very gratifying, and the live experience we gained was invaluable.
OUT OF ALL THE SONGS YOU PLAYED, WHICH ONE GOT THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF THE CROWD AND WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
We have a tune called “Voices” with a frankly bitchin' riff and solo section, great for getting people moving. Many seemed to enjoy some more up tempo material, so that'll be staying around for next time.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE FIRST ROUND AND WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
We learned a lot about our own shortcomings in what people call the “performance” department, which we have been hard at work to rectify. I think in our future gigs we will be a much more capable group in terms of response to the crowd: maybe not moves like Jagger yet, but we'll get there.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?
Unfortunately, we were beset by exams this month, but we have shrugged them off like the good lazybones we are, and forged ahead with practice. Tightening up our set and improving our showmanship, as I said above, have been our main priorities of late, apart from of course drinking our minimum weekly quotas of beer.
SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
Personally once again, the idea of performing at the actual Metro Theatre is pretty terrifying, and very exciting as well. The other two boys are right keen to make it happen, but we are also realistic about our chances. Ultimately, there are seven or eight other bands performing and only two go through. We are ready and willing to put on a good show on its own terms, and if it takes us further we will be some very happy chappies.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING CONCERT AT THE FACTORY THEATRE?
Even getting to play at The Factory Theatre is a big deal for the three of us; it may not be as storied as The Enmore or The Metro, but it's still a really proper big venue. We hope that we can help some people have a good night, learn some new things, and also see some other good music too. I am sure it will be exciting and fun.
