Before Sydney band Bourke Street take their mean mix of blues, soul and funk rock to the stage at The Factory Theatre, they sit down to catch up with us. Check out our pre-show interview where the band talks about everything from rocking our for the first round and preparing for the semi-finals of Emergenza Festival Australia. And don’t miss your chance to see them this Saturday, October 18th.
FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET TO SEE YOU IN THE FIRST ROUND, CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO YOUR BAND BOURKE STREET?
We're a four-piece band from Sydney, undefined by genre but defined by passion for music and performing. Influences from jazz, reggae, blues, funk, rock and more.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
The highlight of the first round would have to be playing at The Metro Theatre in front of a paying crowd. It was exciting to see the other bands too and encouraging to receive the response that we did.
OUT OF ALL THE SONGS YOU PLAYED, WHICH ONE GOT THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF THE CROWD AND WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
As usual, the song that gets the biggest reaction is usually “Valerie”. It's a great song is know by many, but our version has a sneaky little touch of Bourke Street magic, and wraps up the set really well.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE FIRST ROUND AND WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
We had a great experience in the first round, and we learnt that this competition has a high level of consistent talent throughout each band. We're looking forward to the next round.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?
Haven't done much, aye.
SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
Great.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING CONCERT AT THE FACTORY THEATRE?
A step into the third round would be great, though we're really looking forward to playing at the factory and the challenge.
