Animus Opens Up Before The Semi-Finals

Alt rock band Animus talks to us before they hit the stage at The Espy Gershwin Room for the semi-finals

Melbourne band Animus are back again at The Espy with their groovy, alt rock tunes—this time in The Gershwin Room for the semi-finals of Emergenza Festival Australia. Be sure to check out their shocking stage performance this Friday, October 10th, and in the meantime, read what the band had to say in this pre-show interview.

FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET TO SEE YOU IN THE FIRST ROUND, CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO ANIMUS?
We are a Melbourne band based in the South East suburbs that got together approximately five years ago, stitched together by our primary mutual influences (Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin and Queen).

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
The highlight of the first round for us was receiving the opportunity to play our own original music that we have been working on for a while meticulously to such a warm, accepting live audience, while additionally having them sing our songs back to us was pretty surreal.

OUT OF ALL THE SONGS YOU PLAYED, WHICH ONE GOT THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF THE CROWD AND WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
“White Line Fever”, the way we have marketed this song through social media was definitely an integral part of the audience attaining an effortless level of familiarity with that song, plus the hook is just so fucking simple, it’s designed to get stuck in your head.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE FIRST ROUND AND WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
Well for one, we probably need to practice more effectively to make sure our music is tight as it can be, also that the audience feeds off a good cover, and that is paramount that the audience understands what you are trying to achieve.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?
We have been playing a couple of cover shows to keep busy and have been practicing two days a week, anywhere up to 4-6 hours to polish the three originals we played from the last gig and to bring in an up coming newbie.

SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
Well, it's only just begun so we don't really know how to feel. We won't be content until we are in the grand finale.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING CONCERT AT THE ESPY?
More admirers and appreciators of what we loosely define as art and possibly entry into the next round.
