Before Sydney band Citizen Sunday takes their experimental Brit rock tunes to the stage at The Factory Theatre for the semi-finals of Emergenza Festival Australia, the band sits down to talk to us. We hear about how the first round went and what’s in store for the semis this Friday, October 10th. Check out what the band had to say here:
FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T GET TO SEE YOU IN THE FIRST ROUND, CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO YOUR BAND CITIZEN SUNDAY?
Citizen Sunday is all about playing original edgy, rock-driven music. Based in Sydney, this group has been making an impression on the underground live music scene since their inception in late 2012. With Kellen Timboe’s powerful vocals and poetic lyrics backed by high-energy riffs and deep melodic styling, their sound is diverse, emotive and uncooked. Their foot-tapping tracks and bold stage presence provides an extremely entertaining show. The band has their own story to tell and invites all those with open ears and open minds to listen in.
WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST ROUND FOR YOU?
A room full of family, friends and Citizen Sunday supporters in full effect.
OUT OF ALL THE SONGS YOU PLAYED, WHICH ONE GOT THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF THE CROWD AND WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
Our opening track “54 Stations” tends to catch people off guard and really set the scene for the remainder of the set. It may not be our strongest track but the energy is contagious and leaves the crowd in a state of frenzy wondering what to expect next. We plan to expand on that during this round.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE FIRST ROUND AND WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
We learned that sound checks are extremely valuable but short lived.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO BETWEEN GIGS AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THE COMPETITION?
We have juggled our set list to add some new tracks replacing some classics in order to give the crowd a different type of experience this time around. We are planning to use every minute in the set to our advantage. It’s a mixed bag of roaring guitar riffs and thrilling melodies.
SO HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EMERGENZA FINALS?
Exhilarating. Pure adrenaline.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR UPCOMING CONCERT AT THE FACTORY THEATRE?
We hope to take away some new fans and a new appreciation for exploring a landscape as fine as The Factory Theatre’s stage.
