With a name inspired by Game of Thrones and original hard rock tunes influenced by artists like Nirvana and The Foo Fighters, The Bloody Mummers definitely rock to the beat of their own mummer drummer. Come check them out this Thursday, October 9th when they take the stage at The Lair for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. And in the meantime, read what the band had to say in this pre-show interview.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME THE BLOODY MUMMERS?
The Bloody Mummers... well, in the Game of Thrones books/tv show, this is a nickname given to the rather sadistic and horrifying bunch of fellows who style themselves The Brave Companions. Being complete and utter nerds, we love this kind of stuff, and as an added bonus the name seems pretty unique to us in terms of bands. Hopefully we don't suddenly find ourselves going around, you know, looting, pillaging, that kind of thing. We just like the name.
WHO PLAYS WHAT IN THE BAND AND WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED TO PLAY MUSIC TOGETHER?
Eamonn Briers is our mysterious guitar player who lives on another plane of existence, contemplating the deeper meanings behind, say, the mixolydian scale. He is also the songwriter and main singer, because he's the only one who remembers the lyrics. Jack Newman is our friendly neighbourhood drumming-bear, loves making loud noises, getting out of time (just kidding Jack), and beer. Well, we all like beer. Jem Hoppe-Smith (me), exceptionally gorgeous and multi-talented adonis that I am not, am the band's bass player, and jumper-around, and tech head. I love twiddling knobs and whinging about how the mic cables are all tangled.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Hmmmm.... Fun, Pub, Rock? Three words ain't much. We are still developing our sound (do people really say that? gosh).
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
There are lots, but for this kind of music, mostly: Nirvana, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Led Zeppelin. Big, famous, amazing musicians all.
WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE DONE TOGETHER AS A BAND?
Well, as I said we are nerds, so crazy tends to happen closer to home. I think it goes without saying that defiling nice couches with alcohol is something we are all guilty of doing (especially young Jack), but us young'uns have yet to really hit our rock'n'roll stride. Someday, I promise, our exploits will be spoken of in hushed tones at the local punk gigs.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT YOUR SHOW AT THE LAIR?
Just having fun, and hopefully getting some noise out to people who might be keen to hear us more. We love playing this stuff, and if we can keep doing it for others, we will. This concert is a great place for us to find our footing. I'm also keen to hear what else is out there.
WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
Well, we get to talk to nice people and give long, rambling interviews for a start. Seriously though, there is a definite prospect of playing another gig further down the line with the competition, and that is a great thing in itself. The exposure we get is a massive part of it too. Personally as a gear-nerd I also appreciate getting to use nice big amps and stuff... anyway. The Emergenza competition just seems really well put together.
