Beyond the Picture
It was a great feeling to have Heat One of the Emergenza season kicking off again in beautiful Adelaide, and what better way to start the Adelaide season than with a young up and coming band in Beyond the Picture! Giving bands opportunities is what Emergenza is all about and it was great to see these young lads relishing their opportunity to perform on a big stage! These boys are obviously influenced by the grunge era, particularly 'Nirvana,' but I would say young Josh on lead vocals and guitar has a much different and maybe better voice than the late Kurt. Harry on drums was super to watch and has stacks of energy! 'Let it Out' was a highlight of the set and when the band seemed most confident. Greatness is not beyond this band!
Gate 9
Boy oh boy, these guys are next level! Things went up a notch with our second act Gate 9! Actually, scrap that, things went up 11 notches! One of the biggest sounds we have had in the Emergenza festival for some time came from the Gate 9 lads. Massive guitar riffs, shredding guitar solos, powering bass, cracking drums and a pitch perfect wailing voice over the top by front man Kenny provided this crowd with some serious ear loving! Opener ‘We’re Gunna Party’ blew heads off and woke everybody up and was quickly followed by killer track after killer track before the boys melted everyone's faces off with instrumental piece 'Stackato.' Final track 'Ready to Rumble' epitomised everything this band is about and had their loyal fans up the front going mental for Gate 9!
Roadhaul
Three piece metal shredders Roadhaul were the next act to take the stage and they took up where the act before them left off! These guys had so much energy it was hard to know where to look! Led by bass player and lead vocalist Joey the boys took flight with amazing guitar skills shown by Ryan and amazingly tight and up tempo drumming by Daniel. Nice use of the wah pedal on the guitar intro of 'Against the Grain' saw the boys burst into this tune which was not only their closing track but the highlight of the set!
Overview Effect
Overview Effect started off their set with a captivating intro that drew the listeners in before the band gave way and let front lady Felicia take centre stage with her vocal duties! Overview Effect are a very hard band to describe, with many shifts in their pieces, things like tempo, structure and style often change which keep the listener intrigued. In the second piece this listener was reminded of bands such as 'Tool' in terms of structure, sound and vocal delivery.
Love Cream
Love Cream took to the stage next for a set of in-your-face rock! These guys are glam rockers from way back but with new age style! They had the crowd in the palm of their hand and the crowd was more than happy to oblige! It's hard to put a finger on what it is about front man Vinnie but he defiantly has X factor! He is one hell of an out there dude! The lead guitarist is slick and the third song of the set was a highlight with the crowd chanting along! By the end of the set the crowd was chanting for more Love Cream!
Til the Break
A change of pace was to break up the night and finish off Heat One on a high! Three piece acoustic hip hop act Til the Break gave the crowd an entertaining and intriguing set of original tunes! Taiaha who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead vocals has one hell of an amazing voice and is backed by Jackson on beat box and rapping. This is what they like to call ‘Art-Rhyming!’ Call it whatever you like, I will call it awesome! They were joined by a female friend mid-set to provide some sweet backing vocals to top it all off! A great experience to see and listen to Til the Break!
