There’s no doubt Melbourne solo artist GD Allan shares some part of his musical soul with American singer songwriter Mark Lanegan. His original song “A Hole In My Heart” could totally have been co-written by the two of them. But it’s in his inclination toward the jazzy and electronic where the two diverge. Just listen to his single “Angel”, with its spoken word-esque, beatnik vibe in the vocals, and a jazzy, yet minimalist, electronic soundscape, to get the idea. Or “It’s As Good As This”, which combines funky bass lines and bluesy vocals with politically charged electronic samples. No doubt GD Allan is doing something all his own.
