Sydney band Dlinkwnt, pronounced delinquent, are taking their jazzy, funky tunes to the stage at The Lair this Sunday, August 31st for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. The chance to represent their country in the finals was a major drawing card for them, having already had the experience of making it to the finals of a few other national band competitions. That being said, Dlinkwnt is definitely a band to watch. Check out what they had to say to us before the gig:

WHAT SIGNIFICANCE DOES THE NAME DLINKWNT HAVE FOR YOU AND HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE IT?
When our front man Nick was a little kid, his grandmother would refer to him as a juvenile delinquent when he was in trouble. He was also a solo Emcee for several years before forming the band as it is today. To Nick naming the band Dlinkwnt was a way of paying homage to his grandmother as she sadly passed away from cancer a few years ago. It’s pronounced Dee-Link-Went (Delinquent).

WHO PLAYS WHAT IN THE BAND AND WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED TO PLAY MUSIC TOGETHER?
In total there 7 members: Jack and Stu on trumpet, Aaron on drums, Mr. Quin on bass, Er-Chih on keys, Sarah on vocals, and Nick on vocals. A lot of the band has spent years learning music and playing together around the Illawarra, it’s the unique style of music that we create that keeps us playing music together.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Jazz, hip hop, funk.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
With 7 band members our influences span a wide range from classical jazz to heavy metal and from classic 90’s hip hop right through to current day pop music. ArtOfficial, Cat Empire, Wright Family, Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Lil Wayne, Slipknot, Gyroscope.

WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE DONE TOGETHER AS A BAND?
Put our combined skills together, packed a mini bus full of band gear and set out on the road to play shows.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT YOUR SHOW AT THE LAIR?
The chance to play at such an iconic venue in an international comp in front of an amazing crowd.

WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
The chance to represent our country was a major drawing card, we have been in national band comps before where we placed in the top three, so having the chance to battle it out to represent our country will be amazing.
