From Hex to Hyperdrones, this band may have changed names, but one thing has stayed the same: rock and roll. With original tunes influenced by heavy bands like Nine Inch Nails and Queens Of The Stone Age, we fully expect the Hyperdrones to kill it on stage at The Espy when they battle it out in round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. Check them out there this Saturday, August 2nd, and in the meantime, check out our pre-show Q and A with the band.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME HYPERDRONES?
We were called Hex for years, and then later decided we needed a name that didn't make us sound like witchcraft enthusiasts. Hyperdrones seemed to do that, so this has been our name for over a year now.
WHO PLAYS WHAT IN THE BAND AND WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED TO PLAY MUSIC TOGETHER?
Gilchrist plays guitar and sings, Matt plays bass. Clarke agreed to be a short-term, fill-in drummer over summer, but that was four years ago. We're hoping that nobody tells him so that we can actually keep playing music together.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Rumbling, spacey, heavy.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, Muse.
WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE DONE TOGETHER AS A BAND?
Offstage we're not really anything crazy, we're actually pretty boring. Really boring. We're like the accountants of rock music, except we make poor financial decisions and spend all of our money on new music gear.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT YOUR SHOW AT THE ESPY?
It's going to be our first show playing at The Espy together, so that's pretty exciting in itself. We've seen awesome bands like The Vasco Era, Kashmere Club and King of the North there before, so to get to be in the same space is unreal.
WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
We like playing, but we don't like being scammed by having to pre-buy tickets ourselves (it's the accountants in us). Emergenza seemed like a good chance to be a part of a band comp where success isn't determined by the size of your wallet, we're up for that!
