Maximum Funk and Vox to Match: Origami Birds

Neo-soul jazz funk fusion band Origami Birds are looking to get down at The Lair this Sunday, July 20th

The love this band has for neo-soul act Hiatus Kaiyote is evidenced by the fact that their name Origami Birds was taken directly from the lyrics of a HK song “Mobius Streak”. These birds definitely share a similarly fearless attitude toward meshing different genres in their music as that famous band does, even incorporating rapper Kay Marz in their song “Pineapple”, which you can stream on their Triple J Unearthed page. Jazz and funk play a huge role in the groove of this band—saxophone and trumpet join the guitar, bass and drum to fill in and get the maximum funky flavour out of their sound. The female singer takes on elements of vocalists like Erykah Badu in her smooth delivery and ability to pull a clear pop melody out of soulful vocal runs and complex chord changes. The live video of their song “Chiller” takes on a more melancholy, jazzy mood where the vocals cry out in nostalgia and solemn musing over young love. Don’t miss your chance to see these soulful birds at The Lair this Sunday, July 20th when they hit the stage for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. They’re definitely going to add some funk to the mix. Click here for more show info.
