The Magic’s in the Trio: Third Best Friend

Melbourne rock band Third Best Friend uses a tried and true format—the power trio—to execute some incredible tunes

You might categorize Third Best Friend as having an old school mentality, but it wouldn’t be for the groovy, retro effects pedals they use like so many young, trendy bands these days. No, these guys stick to a tried and true power trio format in order to execute solid rock songs that are chock full of melody and groove. As they say, the three-piece format allows plenty of sonic space for each musician and gives the band plenty of control over dynamics. Indeed, TBF, indeed. With great rhythmic riffs, solid melodies and classic vocal harmonies, like in “Renegade”, it’s no wonder the band labels their music as Melodic. Powerful. Honest. Any one of the songs you can stream on the band’s Soundcloud page would undoubtedly hold up as well on a radio station as on stage. They’ve got the right balance of the dark and melancholy and the edgy and in-your-face, providing for a superb all around rock and roll energy. Although they’ve been putting more of their focus into recording lately, TBF will be taking a break from the studio to hit the stage at The Espy this Friday, June 20th for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia. Good news for fans of theirs: they’ll be debuting some brand-spanking-new material for your listening pleasure. For show details, click here.
