Understanding the ‘Dark Forces’ Behind King Evil

Melbourne band King Evil talks about their evil groove, musical inspirations, and hopes for the first step of the festival

It’s all in the name for King Evil from Melbourne. Their songs are groovy and dark. Taking a cue from inspirational acts like Tool and Radiohead, they call their listeners’ attention to some of the more ominous aspects of modern times. Before they go on stage at The Espy this Friday, June 20th for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia, the band sits down to talk to more in depth about where they draw their influences from and what they’re looking forward to most about the upcoming gig.

HOW DOES THE NAME KING EVIL EPITOMIZE THE BAND?
Well at the core most of our songs have dark undertones, the lyrics are heavily influenced by the scary shit that's going on around us which most people choose to ignore.

WHO PLAYS WHAT IN THE BAND AND WHAT'S YOUR LIVE SET UP LIKE?
Jack senior, guitar/lead vox; Eddie Jacobs, bass/backup vox; Jordan Okeefe, keyboard; Fabian storer, guitar; Tim Hurley, drums. Live setup involves one fender hot rod deluxe, one vox, bass amp, drums and keys.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
    Melancholy, infused, psychedelia.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Tool, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Primal scream.

WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE DONE TOGETHER AS A BAND?
Dallas Frasca punched our bass player in the guts.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT YOUR SHOW AT THE ESPY?
We jammed for a year in a dank house amongst a pine plantation that was torn to shreds by psychopaths and one night they rocked up and stuck around to dig our jams.

WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
It’s an awesome opportunity to reach a fresh and larger audience. We just wanna put on a good show for y'all.
