Pyramid Room takes inspiration from sources as diverse as Porcupine Tree and Metallica to create their own unique, explosive sound. They already came in second at a battle of the bands competition after playing only a few gigs, and they now have their eyes set on Emergenza Festival Australia. Before they hit the stage at The Lair this Sunday, June 1st for round one, they hang out and answer a few of our questions.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME PYRAMID ROOM?
The name was an idea that Thamal had for a while, and once we shortlisted ideas for names, Pyramid Room was the standout. We liked the idea surrounding the mystery of what a hidden room within a pyramid may contain—hidden treasure, secrets, the possibilities are immense. We felt it represented our sound and style perfectly.
WHO PLAYS WHAT IN THE BAND AND WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED TO PLAY MUSIC TOGETHER AS A BAND?
Pyramid Room is made up of Mayank on vocals and lead guitar, Sid on rhythm guitar, Dev on bass, and Thamal on drums. Our chemistry as a band is a big driving factor for us to keep playing music together. We write well as a band and can easily feed off each other’s energy and focus. Being able to get away from the corporate world and enter a zone where we’re free to create music and express ourselves without limitations also keeps us constantly inspired and motivated.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Energetic progressive rock.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Opeth, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Tool, Katatonia, Porcupine Tree, Sevendust.
WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED BEFORE AND WHAT WOULD BE A DREAM GIG FOR YOU?
Pyramid Room are new to the live scene, and we’ve only gigged at OneWorld in Parramatta. However individually in previous bands we have gigged at places such as Riverside Theatre, Tumbalong Park and Gaelic Club. A dream gig would basically be anywhere where we had a venue full of fans supporting and singing along with us. But if we had to pick a venue, somewhere like Tokyo Dome would be great, or perhaps amongst the Great Pyramids of Egypt!
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT YOUR SHOW AT THE LAIR?
Playing at an iconic venue, getting to hear and meet other fantastic bands, and being able to share our music with more and more people
WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
Emergenza is well established and truly international, giving growing bands a great launching pad.
