Young indie band from Melbourne, Des Chio, likes to throw lots of different elements into their sound, creating a unique take on the genre. They can’t wait to take their experimental mojo to the stage at The Espy for round one of Emergenza Festival Australia on May 10th to help garner new fans and hopefully a spot in the semi-finals. Don’t miss your chance to see them then, and in the meantime, check out our pre-show interview with the band.
WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION FOR THE NAME DES CHIO?
I (Dante’) originally formed the band under the name ToBeHonest in 2012. Then it was decided from talking to some industry experts that a sound and lineup change was in order. So In December 2013, we rejuvenated and an energetic Des Chio was born. We were inspired by the name after talking to a number of people and throwing ideas around and looking at different slang meanings and found that no one else had the name, so it stuck.
FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN'T HEARD YOUR MUSIC BEFORE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
We have an indie sound and we like to add other elements of different genres into the mix of things, creating a mix of sound.
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU FROM OTHER YOUNG INDIE POP ROCK BANDS?
Our songs can be related to all different age brackets, and we are not afraid to experiment with different sounds within our music.
WHO PLAYS WHAT IN THE BAND AND WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED TO PLAY MUSIC TOGETHER?
I (Dante’) play guitar and sing; Joel plays bass; and Kiana plays synth and sings. The inspiration comes from all of us playing and experimenting with new sounds and writing songs.
WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED BEFORE AND WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM GIG BE?
We have played at The Espy, Central Hotel, clubs, private functions and festivals all over Melbourne. Our dream gig would be to play at Wembley Stadium in front of thousands of fans.
HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THE SHOW AT THE ESPY?
We are rehearing every week.
WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
Emergenza actually contacted us to enter, and also we new last year’s winner Mercury White, and they encouraged us to enter because the experience is so valuable.
