    Pre-Show Interview with LE FAY

The many members of Le Fay entertain us before their show at The Espy May 9th by answering a few of our questions

Le Fay has got more vocalists than instrumentalists, and that’s what makes them so interesting. Their music is based heavily on harmonization and they are down to invite just about anyone on stage to add to the mix. They can’t wait to take a shot at Emergenza Festival Australia for round one May 9th at The Espy. Be sure to see this incredibly unique act, and while you’re waiting for them to go on, check out our pre-show interview with the band.

CAN YOU INTRODUCE US TO THE MEMBERS OF LE FAY?

    Jade – songwriter/guitarist/vocalist; Kahla – vocalist; Heli – vocalist; Liz –
vocalist/violinist; Sam – bassist; Alex – drummer; Yianni – sometimes vocalist. Alex is the babe of the band, and Sam is the broody, enigmatic guy. Jade is the eccentric one, who often has no idea what anyone is talking about. Kahla and Liz are the sweethearts, Heli is basically Arya from Game of Thrones, and Yianni is kind of like a mix between Patrick Stewart, Arnie Schwarzenegger, and the Count from Sesame Street.

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED TO PLAY MUSIC TOGETHER?
Jade and Kahla have been singing together since high school. Heli and Jade shared a few stages and radio mics at Uni. Liz and Jade used to be put under the spotlight together in frilly dresses at family Christmases. When we all got together, we realised that our voices sit really well together. Basically, we just like hanging out with each other, and we're nerdy enough that instead of going out like normal people, we hang out in the lounge-room and sing!

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
    Catchy, harmonies, melody.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER FOLK INDIE POP BANDS?
We have so many singers! Sometimes, we've been on stage with five vocalists! It's so much fun! Also... we're all living double lives. We're like a Marvel Comic band. Jade and Alex and Liz and Yianni are all doctors. Sam is a physicist. Kahla is a teacher. The beauty of Le Fay is that, as a project, we invite people to join us all the time if they add something to what we're currently working on. People can come and go, but the heart of the project remains the same.

WHERE HAVE YOU PLAYED BEFORE AND WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM GIG BE?
We only began as a project last October. We played our debut gig at the Icy Creek Music Festival. It was awesome, a huge sold out crowd out near Mount Baw Baw. We then played at a really chic gallery for a fundraiser and have since played at the Brunswick Hotel for Scorcher Festival. Jade used to play a lot at the Vinyard in St. Kilda and at The Brunswick Hotel, but that was as a solo act. Our dream gig? The Taubertal Open Air Festival, of course!

HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THE SHOW AT THE ESPY?
Carb-loading, mostly. And lots of vocal rehearsals.

WITH OTHER BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITIONS AROUND, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE EMERGENZA?
Emergenza offered promotion for the gig as well. The hardest part about being in a band is the advertising and the marketing.
